When I picked-up my new bike I saw some signs of gas spillage around the cap and thought it had been spilled when the dealer filled it with a couple gallons of gas for the first time. Today I put gas in myself for the first time (3 gl) and noticed fresh gas had leaked from around the cap on the way home. I discovered one of the two screws holding the cap assembly to the tank was loose and tightened it. This reduced, but didn't stop the leakage when I shook the tank and the pressure built. I removed the assembly completely and discovered the right screw's O-ring (between tank and hinge base) was partially mangled and caught outside its groove. I did manage to fit the O-ring back in its groove and reassembled. The leak seems to be gone so far. There was just the tiniest sign of venting right after shaking the tank, but not enought to liquify and start dripping. Hopefully this was just the O-ring needing replacing, and maybe the main seal is still seating. Or maybe its supposed to do that (?). I think I'll probably just go to the hardware store to replace that tiny O-ring instead of going through all the trouble of going to the dealer. They're probably .05 cents in the plumbing department. I think I'll buy 2 extra for my tool kit. At least I don't think this O-ring is so specific that it has to be acquired from a dealer? I hear a low whistling noise in the tank after shaking it, I guess it's the fumes recirculating back through the small vent hole under the cap. Otherwise, I'm been riding the bike around town and am anxious to get through the break-in so I can go on a trip! I've been prescribing to the manufacture's recommendation of below 4k rpm for 500 miles and varying the rpms as much as possible. I'm going to change the oil and filter at 250 and 500. I'm really enjoying the torque and relaxed cruising rpms this bike provides. MY GUESS is that you are absolutely correct. It will be a big fiasco taking it to the dealer. My guess is that the dealer was incompetent in checking out the machine before delivery and that he will be equally incompetent in resolving the problem. I have been appalled by the Kaw dealer network and their inefficient abilities in solving mechanical problems or customer dissatisfaction. HOWEVER, if you bugger it up, I am sure the dealer will find some way to disregard any claim to warranty work. Hope my strong opinions are unfounded for your dealer and good luck. I'm going to check that out, and reroute it. And go hit some water, and see how it dose then. But I bet when the tube is under water for a few seconds, it kills the bike. It really sucks when going through creeks, especially during the winter, and have to put my feet down in the cold water to restart the bike. I put the stage II kit in (150 main, clip in 4th slot, two washers above clip, drilled the slide, drilled the Airbox with four 3/8 in holes). I have to say that the difference is tremendous. nailing it in first lofts the front wheel easily (even with the 16T sprocket) and the front gets way-light on the 1-2 shift. I'm happy! I took it for a 30 min. run and the performance is excellent all the way around. I do have a couple questions for those in the know, however. First, old SuperTrapps (hey, it was free!). Mine has the discs on the outside and I counted nine of them. Is there replacable packing in this model? It is quite loud (sorry, neighbor) and I was wondering if I could quiet it a bit without removing discs. I am right in thinking that removing discs will make it more quiet and run richer, right? Second, tuning. I noticed after my ride that the rear fender near the pipe had quite a lot of soot on it. I guess this indicates it is running rich? Where should I start (or should I even start) with tuning it. The thing seems to run great. Is there a chance I just havent opened up the airbox enough? It seems that those on the list who have drilled the airbox have drilled more numorous and larger holes than I have...anyone know what the minimum area needed is?
