It's a chemical process that lightly etches the steel and deposits a thin coating of a phosphate compound, manganese phosphate being a common one. Common applications are firearms and certain older model Harley Davidson restorations. Common colors are flat gray and charcoal black. The etched, matte surface o0f the parkerizing leaves a very good surface for bonding of the subsequent coats of enamel (laquer, actualy) , which are then baked in an oven. The stuff I use calls for three thin coats with ten min. drying in between coats, then baking at 350 deg F for 35 min. This combination is very, very tough to beat in my experience. As for aluminum, the other listers statement about the enamel on aluminum is true: you can probably get much better adhesion by using the approaches he outlined However, for many applications the Brownell's Baking Laquer I use sticks to beat-blasted and preheated aluminum well enough for many applications. - -Tom '96 KLR 650 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to dsneditor@softhome.net for info. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 17:48:40 -0600 From: Alan L Henderson Subject: Re: (klr650) Tuning Questions >>Second, tuning. So I take what you're saying is one couldn't install the pre 96 option on a 2000 model? I know how you know While touring the Blue Ridge Parkway and the east coast during the month of Feburary, the temps never got above 35. I was looking like a freak genetic cross between Pilsbury and Michelin .... I don't think I could have push started. The kicker came in handy as all I had to do was catch it with my boot as I got on and it fired right up. 'course, there IS that XR650L sitting at a dealer between me and the KLR. Do you know of any comparisons between the two? I'm really itching for the XR as bad as for the KLR.
