I was expecting it to be higher BTW, here's a further qualification I overlooked on the previous letter (reprinted below): My speedometer reads 8-10% fast, but my odometer has less than 1% error (determined by checking each mile sign for twenty miles or more on an Interstate highway). ................................................................. ........................ My KLR650 A13 is stock except for removal of the evaporative emission canister and related equipment. The "T" in the vacuum line was removed and the line now goes only to the fuel petcock. These changes seemed to improve both my fuel mileage and low-end torque, but it could easily be my imagination. I check every tank; here are my last 10 numbers: 53.1, 51.4, 56.4, 61.3, 55.2, 62.0, 55.6, 59.0, 60.0, 61.6. The higher numbers are highway trips at 70 to 75 indicated. In the past, I tried cruising at 80 to 85 indicated and my mileage dropped into the low 40s. my mileage was poor initially, but I discovered the air filter element was coated with a thick, waxy substance -- perhaps applied by the dealer at the 500 mile service. I washed it thoroughly with a kerosene-type solvent and have used 10-40 motor oil since. I clean my air filter element after any ride of several hours on dusty roads. It always seems to need it. ................................................................. ..................... Think of the 650 motor as a single pot out of something like a 350 Chev, then think of how much work it takes to get one of those (with their good V8 primary balance and one-piece crank) to rev that hard. Imagine how stiff the valve springs would need to be, and wonder whether the ignition is up to those revs. But it's fun to consider the possibilites. Has anyone on the list taken a KLR to other extreme as in removing as much weight as possible and bringing engine performance up to par with other 650cc class engines? There's not much point in trying to turn a KLR into a KLX, Kawasaki have already done the work for us. As for matching other brand 650s, the old KLR design would need some serious work to match the claimed output of the new XR650 which is alleged to do 62ps (I read in a magazine), and not many of us would be that serious. The KLR is the first 4 stroke (not to mention HEAVIEST) bike I've ever owned. I was mistaken when I thought that buying a bike like the KLR that I would not be riding like I would on my KX's and KDX's (RIP...Gone but not forgotten). While the riding IS a bit different, I find that I am still able to bust my ass quite nicely, thank you. It's not because I missed the double jump, though! As much as I hate to admit it (being a life-long Kawasaki loyalist), the new XR is hot. Do I need to even mention the KTM or the exotic "motards" in this months Cycle World? No doubt the KLR is more suited for "touring" than those, can you imagine how it would benefit from a few more HP, and the WP suspension from the KTM (50 mm forks and 12 inches of travel!!!)? 9.1 inches isn't much, regardless of preload or progression, in many off road instances...ESPECIALLY with 350 pounds of bike sitting on it. I can't think of an excuse for 38 mm forks. I console myself with a nice motorcycle with easily reachable limits. Also, I spent about $2000 less on the KLR than the XR, and about $4000 less than the european bikes! So if I spend $1k on hop up, I'm still below the others on cost. Still...it would be nice for Kawasaki to throw their hat in the ring with something FAST! I was still on two-strokes when the KLR lived... What happened to it?
