Okeeffe" Subject: Re: (klr650) (NKLR)Mike's Sky ranch I was there about two summers ago. I was on an XT600, the girlfriend and my male friend were both on DR350s. The trail out of Mike's was pretty hardcore--quite a workout. We turned around after a mile and took the road. I had to ride my bike for a couple of hundred yards, get off, ride the girlfriend's DR up the trail, etc... It didn't look like it was getting easier. I would have tried it on my XT with no reservations if I was alone, I mean with a competent riding partner. If you have a lot of off-road experience, like you're fairly quick, then you should be fine on a KLR. If not, you might want to take something more dirt worthy. It kinda depends upon how fast your company is. Actually, I didn't think the DR had enough oomph for that trail. I was beating up the clutch on those rocks but I couldn't maintain enough speed with camping equipment strapped on. I think the trail to Mike Sky Rancho would be very difficult on a heavy motorcycle. The road is much more adviseable for a KLR. Also you will have to learn to ride 60mph in soft sand to ride the ROAD to Mike Sky Ranch. There are several sections adding up to a few miles of sugar-sand. If you ride 40 mph you'll wear yourself out, you have to get up to 60 and "plane' on the sand, which takes some practice. If you're a go-for-it kinda guy I'd say you have the right mindset to learn this. Keep in mind this one thing: "Get up to 60 MPH and don't deathgrip the bike" Let it float around a little on the sand and after about a day or so in Baja you'll understand sand, and even enjoy it. In 41,000 miles, perhaps 500 of which has been on dirt, my bike has been on its side perhaps a dozen times, Only three were on pavement and those were at aa average speed of about 3 miles an hour. Two were the result of the bike stalling (okay, *me* stalling the bike) during low-speed manouvers. One was the result of a car pulling out in front of me while riding home from work one cold, rainy night. I locked up the rear wheel, looped it out and dumped it: Bent OEM shift lever and a bruised thigh. Off road crashes have usualy also been relativly gentle, usualy stemming from stalls on realy uneven ground that kept me from getting my leg out to support the bike and causing me to step off of it One encounter last October with a barbewire fence resulted in a gashed fork boot but no other damage. I've demolished both rear OEM blinkers and bent both the front brake and clutch levers once each. Oh, yeah: the padlock-through-the-rear-brake-rotor incident That was both ugly and expensive :) - -Tom '96 KLR 650 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@softhome.net To subscribe/unsubscribe send message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com leave subject blank.
