Begin by getting your battery fresh and making sure it is in good shape. 2. Pull the line from the carb, put the end in a container so that you avoid any fire hazard and crank the engine, you should have fuel spilling into the container in a good quantity. If not, the problem is fuel and it is upstream of the carb, either a vacuum line kinked or disconnected from the petcock; a faulty petcock; a clogged line or petcock, or problem with the venting from the tank. 3. If you have fuel to the carb. Pull the airbox cover and filter, spray just a tad bit of starter fluid in the intake and turn it over. If it starts the problem is fuel between the intake and the fuel line. Pull the carb and give it a good cleaning and inspect everything. 4. Make sure your choke (fuel enricher) cable is functioning. 5. If none of that does any good it is probably electrics. 6. Reach underneath and pull the plug wire, put a spare plug in the holder and hold it to a ground on the engine being careful that there is not spilled fuel nearby. Look for a spark. If no spark, you have a problem with the primary circuit either in the wires or coil or ??? Here is where my experience starts to wane...Fred... Sorry but with a '97 you won't get much experience with rebuilding this bike. They are kind of like the "Energizer Bunny". They keep on running and running. Checking for spark is normally easy on most bikes. Getting to the sparkplug is not easy on a KLR but see that you have spark first. Then if you do, I would give your air cleaner a shot of Starting Fluid. If it runs and quits then you have a fuel problem. Sometimes the Starting Fluid will get your bike started and fix the fuel problem as well. If you have no spark, check the safety switches. (side stand switch and clutch lever switch) Check the DSN web site to see how to disable these switches. Don't let Kurt fool you, he has plenty of experience... My riding is about 50% pavement/50% dirt and gravel logging roads. My concern is the limited amount of contact area on the rear tire for riding on pavement. Is there adequate grip and how does it wear? Should I maybe go for the MT40's, or some combination of the two, such as an MT21 front and MT40 rear? Is that a bad idea? Lack of front tire grip has been a problem for me on the logging roads, more than the rear. I've only got 3,000 miles on my A13 but it is time for some new rubber. While I have no experience with the Pirellis, have you considered other options? I like the Kenda K270 tires. They're a decent 50/50 tire, run great for me offroad and they're excellent at prolonged highway speeds of 85mph. I think they have pretty good wet pavement traction too. They wear evenly as a set and I get 5,000-5,500 miles from a set. Also, they're CHEAP. I pay locally $23-$30 for the front and $42-$43 for the rear, depending from which shop I get 'em.
