I usually contact Gino, but do not have his address handy and am away from home. On my 84 KLR 600, in preparation on servicing the front wheel bearings, replacing disc and pads, I noticed a spacer between the inboard pad and piston cup of the brake caliper. over the years, the outer cup edge has mostly disintegrated and would cause uneven wear on my new pads. The spacer shows in the exploded view of the service manual, but does not show on the microfiche. I have the local shop investigating if this part is available, or is not necessary for replacement. The service manual does not specify anything on this particular item. Any suggestions and assistance are welcome. In it, he states that you should remove the tensioner before you take the valve cover off, and don't put it back on 'till you have the valve cover back on. Why? It seems to me, with a loose cam chain, you stand a chance of not having proper cam timing when you go to set up the valves. If the chain is loose enough, you could conceivably kink the chain. BTW, before the list jumps all over me, I searched the archives for 10 minutes or so and didn't find an answer. besides, don't you feel sometimes, fresh discussion is a good thing? I mean we all like discussing technical things once in a while- gives us all a break from the 'Gino as prison bitch' threads! (Gino- it's a joke, man!) Sticks down maybe 1/16 in. But my bash plate takes a beating. It has already paid for itself. I like the idea of a rounded off allen head type oil plug. Since I already have a skid plate, I am not gonna buy another. Well maybe not, just depends. An oil plug would be cheaper. This is the real full coverage, with uninsured motorist bodily injury and property damage. Nat'l Gen'l also claims that you get $1500 accessory coverage with that policy, which is intended to pay for stolen or lost jackets, helmets, etc. I chose to submit the R1100 because it's the more expensive bike. So Smilin Bill still recommends the Nat'l General Ins. However: I have never "trusted" an insurance company. They only "pose" as your friend. The real proof comes when you submit a claim. That's when their true colors are shown. I have never submitted a claim, so I can't say who pays up. I've heard (from my prior agent) that Nat'l Gen'l is reliable, and I've heard the same about Progressive. Still don't necessarily trust 'em. > I found a good deal at Progressive. It seems to me, with a loose cam > chain, you stand a chance of not having proper cam timing when you go to > set up the valves. If the chain is loose enough, you could conceivably > kink the chain. an important distinction...Elden says to take off the bolt and spring...he does not say to remove the entire tensioner. The difference is substantial as when you follow the directions and do not remove the entire unit...tension will be maintained on the chain. He makes the distinction about the valve cover busines for pre '96 models where their was a slipper mechanism on the valve cover (at least I'm told this) that can increase the tension without your wanting it too. So, long story short. Do not remove the entire tensioner...just the bolt washer and spring. Second, if you have to adjust the valves be careful not to drop anything down the front of the engine. Third, don't remove the cams, just lift them from the back end (engine right side)...
