"Greetings, Bought my KLR about eight hours ago. It's a '99 blue-green--had only 117 miles on it. Picked it up in Los Banos, CA, and rode it home to Santa Cruz. I had never ridden one before. I'm very pleased with its road manners and how easy it is to ride. I plan to pile on a bunch of break-in miles and then take it to Death Valley toward the end of February. I'm now a two bike man, my other bike being a '91 BMW R100GS. Just a few questions to kinda get me started: 1. How the hay do you get the seat off? Remove both side panels (2 screws each). Then, remove the 2 seat pan bracket bolts. There isn't any storage space underneath :-( 2. What mileage on the trip meter signals time to get gas? I believe you're close to reserve around 225. 3. What kind of mileage life can I expect from the Dunlop 750's? I've read around 3000 for the rear, but it varies. It depends on your weight/load/type of riding conditions (including speed). I usually go through ~2 rears per 1 front tire on motorcycles. 4. Would Stealth Edging be any improvement on the stock shield? Don't know. Could be it would improve integreity over years of vibration. Maybe it looks cool, I've never seen it. Anyone? Thanks in advance for any help with these questions. Bryan Loehr" Glad to help, I'll keep an eye peeled for your bike, I havn't seen many around here. Look at the cam lobes themselves....do they point nicely outward, exhaust lobes pointing forward and parallel with the head surface, and intake lobes pointing rearward parallel with the head surface? To measure the clearance, all lobes must be pointing away from the piston and along the same horizontal plane (perpendicular to the stroke of the piston) as the head surface, at the same time the mark for TDC is in the little window on the flywheel. > > Could it be that the sprockets were put like that for a reason? > What if I just leave them like that? It does take me a bit of trying to get the bike up on the stand. But that's just me.>> This method has been working for me: Stand on left side of bike. I prefer kickstand down. Stand in a sort of "catstance" with right toes on bottom of stands left leg (just over the flared foot), left foot further forward. Lower body by bending right knee, keep back straight. Grasp left handgrip with left hand. Rotate your right hand _counter-clockwise_ 180 degrees until the thumb is pointed backwards and the back of the hand is facing the outside of the right thigh. Hook your fingers underneath the left-passenger peg _bracket_ in front of the peg. Keeping ones back straight, take a deep breath, and while exhaling, lift and lean back simultaneously (don't use your back, the right leg provides most of the lift with a little assistance from the right hand/arm and your body weight provides the rearward force. The edge of the passenger peg bracket is a bit sharp, use a glove or rag to protect hand (this also enables one to lift with more gusto). I'm going to use a piece of leather or short piece of old water hose slit down one side to pad this area permanently. I havn't tryed this with my Ortliebs mounted, but I don't think they'll be in the way. Plus, you get a lot of strange looks, ever in > south Georgia, riding through town on a bike with a rifle on your > back. My solution would be a specialized rifle that is more motorcycle-friendly. One of my (many) ongoing rifle projects is such a package. In my case, I found a No.4 Mk.1* Lee Enfield (Long Branch production) in .303 that some idiot had whacked the barrel down to 14", then realizing his stupidity welded a length of 20 ga. shotgun barrel back on to get it back to legal length. $60 out the door. I drilled the piece of shotgun barrel to form a muzzel brake/ flash supressor. Then I found that you could easily fit a Butler Creek folding stock for a Remington 870 to the butstock socket on the No. 4 reciever. The resulting package is inexpensive, very compact and storable and yields suprisingly good velocity over the chronograph for such a short effective barrel length. All I need to do is work out the scope mount system and it should be a remarkable little toy. There are many other approaches that I could think of as well. For instance, I would like to see if the same folding stock will fit the Remington 760/7600 pump in .30-06. :) - -Tom '96 KLR 650 '43 No.4 Mk.1* Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@softhome.net To subscribe/unsubscribe send message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com leave subject blank. The works machines, while nimble and quick, proved to be fragile and not up to the task of Dakar. The fine riders, Roma, Cox and Arcarons all had major engine trouble. Kinigarder crashed out, but had he survived, engine trouble would most likely have put him out. KTM failed to realize the first rule of competition; "If you want to win the race, you must first finish the race". Bottom Line: At Dakar, KTM is a stage winner, not a race winner. BMW: Mechanically perfect and harmoniously in sync, the works BMW's team simply ground the competition into the desert sand. Had the race run the full course through Niger, KTM would have simply failed earlier. No, ifs or buts, ........the race is over and KTM got its tail kicked soundly. Doesn't matter who won what stage or how many stages, BMW won the race. Bottom Line: At Dakar, BMW is the race winner - again. What IF: 1. KTM not break; KTM win at Dakar, Top 4 -Roma, Kini, Arcrons, Cox 2. Deacon not crash, BMW sweep top 5 spots 3. Woody has tires that can hold up and full race run - Lewis compete for Overall and win most individual stages. 4. All dual sporters call Fred First - Fred be happy, very happy! Most Overlooked Fact: BMW R100GS with 47 year old rider Loizeaux at the controls. He make the Airhead faithful proud. With a 97th place overall finish, riding a "classic", Loizeaus is my hero. It is a shame that BMW Motorrad has totally ignored this fine effort, but proves that the "Airhead" is firmly placed on the heap pile called "classic" by current BMW regime. Analysis by Knot: BMW is fully capable of racing with the Big Dogs with "works" machines as just proved, but its production "dual sport" bikes are aimed at ........not me. The all new, F650GS may be a step in the right direction, but BMW $$$ will place it out of reach for most - I think. R1150GS neat bike and fill a niche, same with F650, but not for me, not right now. Give me a 400lb, 70hp, long travel, good ground clearance, 2-up seat, wind protection, hard bags.......has it been built yet? New XR650LL(liquid-lectric) ? Knot says: Thanks to the faithful who looked forward to this silliness everyday. And to the techno-wizards who showed restraint and knew that it would soon pass. Its over, all done ........closing scene, Knot riding west on old R100GSPD, thinking "Paris-Dakar" what a race............ Knotz Z. Truth PS: Kurt, congratulations on the new union, two become one. Now, ol' Knot been married 17years - when it good - it very good, when it bad - it horrid! Make Mrs. happy and you be happy. Learn to say: 1. I sorry. 2. I very sorry. 3. Honey, I really very sorry. Number 4 (hardest of all) "Honey, I really very sorry, I was WRONG". Knot learn to go directly to step 4 and get quicker results. And advice to Mrs Kurt, "Never let the "little boy" inside your man die. The "little boy' is what brings true joy to life. If Kurt keep his motorbikes, he still "little boy" no matter what happen.
