Just thought I would share my weekend experiences with those of you who enjoy outdoor activities and sports like I do, especially in spring. This weekend I had the great pleasure of spending the night in the hospital with extreme hypothermia. A truly memorable - and sometimes unmemborable- experience. I was participating in the Mt Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, and event I have soloed the past 4 years. The weather was the mildest it had ever been for the event and that is what did me in. I failed to drink enough fluids in the early stages of the race and by the time I reached the windy, snow capped summit of the moutain, I was dehydrated and well on my way into hypothermia. Fortunately course officials saw the signs and stopped me at the next check point, at which I could not remember my name and my speach was slow and slurred. I'm very experienced in outdoor winter sports, I'm in very good physical condition and have considered myself wise to preventing just this situtation. So just thought I'd let you know that, yes, it can happen to you. No off-roading yet, but I'm told there's only a small difference with all the potholes, sinkholes, sand, gravel, and litter in San Francisco. And we have red-light runners in place of furry wildlife. Anyway, I'd like to run a few ideas by and see if they're worth doing: 1. Installing non-dual-sport tires. I think that this would add traction, but would it be sliding more in the rain than the current stock ones? So far, I've had good traction in the rain, but have been reluctant to lean it over hard on dry pavement because of the knobby stock tires. 2. Installing air horns (and the air compressor). I've seen these around at auto shops and they look to be very loud. Has any one upgraded the wimpy stock horn with these? I'm thinking of mounting them on the side cowl. 3. Installing fog lights to supplement the wimpy stock headlight. I've already replaced the stock bulb with a much brighter Solaris bulb, but I'd like better road coverage. Can the battery and alternator handle additional fog lights (at, say, 55W each)? Can the wiring handle it, if I tap the connections off the headlight assembly? Thanks for any answers provided! Anyone have any other ideas short of painting the KLR neon yellow? By the way, the KLR archive site is inaccessible. - -Ben '99 KLR650 '99 YZF-R1 PG&E Energy Services is not the same company as Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the utility. I'm thinking of mounting them on the side cowl. Ben: I have done this. I also bought the KLR with commuting in mind. Much of my trip is three lane interstate and I am fearful of cars changing lanes into me. I bought the brand that is something like "Fiam" or something like that at a local discount store, Meijer. I mounted a horn on each side of the bike in the area under the cowl on the front of the tank. There is just enough room that they can be put in there pointed straight down. One side has more room than the other which works out perfectly since one horn is shorter. They both stick down about an inch or so under the bottom of the tank. I then mounted the compressor in the same area that the stock horn occupied. This was the hardest part. I didn't want it to interfere with anything and I didn't want to alter anything from stock. I messed around with it for a while and sacrificed many zip ties in the process. You can use the stock horn leads to activate the relay but you need to run the juice from a better source than the horn switch. I just went ahead and went back to the battery but you might be able to find something better. I don't think I fused anything so that would be less than optimal. It is very loud. I have not had a chance to try it on an actual lane encroacher because I did it at the end of last season. I am overall happy with this mod. I did it all just with zip ties and I don't believe I altered anything from the stock bike.
