A list of 500 (many others who've come and gone) or so members in operation for two years and still there is a continuing quiet tradition that obtains from day 1 of answering any and every question that comes along. I remember a couple of months ago when my energy was on the wane I posted geez it seems like there have been a few questions that haven't been answered...I then responded to a couple I recalled. I received a private message from Eric R. who said, "I've been keeping track and have made sure that people received information." I was stunned. I find that kind of quiet concern simply amazing. And it is going on all the time. For those of us who've been part of the faithful few from the beginning it is fascinating to watch the turnover on the list and to see the same questions being asked now that were asked two years ago when there wasn't any body of knowledge assembled. >> I must say that this list is as close as you can get to a virtual community. With Kurt's hard work starting it and Arne's excellent job of carrying the flag afterwards, it seems to have a solid foundation and the basic elements that will make it last a long time. Which brings up an interestig point. We have a list that is focused on a motorcycle -the KLR650- that is just as sturdy and durable as the people who ride it. If you look through the archives, you will see that 90% of my posts are NKLR. The simple fact is that in my 5 years of ownership, my KLR has never broke. Sure I've done the jet/pipe thing and put tires on it and seat and springs and shock and that stuff and I answer posts about those topics. I'm also on the Kawasaki ZRX1100 list. It's a very young list and I have been on since December, but the list is active with 99% on topic information mostly regarding high (and I mean high) perfomance mods and such. That list is focused on a motorcycle that lends itself to almost limitless modification. So I just think that our virtual community here simply enjoys each others company. Everyday we come and hang out in the cyber garage. Sometimes we talk about bikes and spin electronic wrenches, sometimes we talk about the weather. It's life and bikes. Apparently some additives have been interfering with the ability of the chain polymers to properly react to heat, thus changing the viscosity. In other words, DON`T use STP with synthetic oil. Otherwise, go for it. Kawasaki motorcycle oil is not complying with the SJ rating and is still a good buy at most shops. As Listmeister, you have a job that's long on labor and short on reward. I hope I can remember to tell you from time-to-time that you are doing a great job. I hadn't been on the list long when Kurt Simpson announced he was giving up the job of Listmeister. At first, I was disappointed but how I'm an Arne Larsen fan. I must say it's the "insiders" who attracted me to this list in the first place. Several of them have a genuine depth of KLR650 technical knowledge which they share freely. I've found this list and it's archives more useful even than shop manuals while learning about my A12. Recently, with a big influx of new people on this list, I was afraid the "insiders" would disappear, but I'm pleased to see that most are still with us. I also enjoy seeing these new people become insiders by offering useful or intertwining information or comments. I once tried filtering out the NKLR stuff, but found I was going to the "Deleted Items" folder to see what I missed. Moreover, the REAL restriction to an oxygen > molecule on its way into the engine is not the size of the airbox intake > hole(s); it's the size of the intake port in the cylinder head (not to > mention the size of the carburetor throat). I invite your input. I don't think anyone on the list has come close to doing what you're suggesting Jim. Some airboxes are notoriously restrictive. Take the DR350 for instance. Dual Sport News did a test of the "Vortex air box" in the December issue. The entire DR intake system was flow tested. Long story short. The air box was the weak link, and even cutting the top of it didn't help much. The Vortex box came close to doubling the available flow volume. In the KLR you might be right, but I doubt anyone here is going to go to the expense you're suggesting as the KLR is not the kind of bike folks buy to get that kind of performance. So the rest is seat of the pants. I tend to agree with your past posts that jet kits, et. al. do more in the way of reducing fuel economy more than anything. You couldn't have convinced me of that when I was in the mode of bulding up the bike. But when I restored mine to stock it still ran strong. Wait a minute...there was one thing I did not restore to stock! It was the drilled airbox...hmmmm (g) Kurt Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@softhome.net To subscribe/unsubscribe send message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com leave subject blank.
