I would wrap duct or electrical tape around the end of the throttle grip before you start drilling to help prevent the throttle grip from cracking. Using progressively larger drill bits as you drill the grip end out could also help prevent cracking. Do not ask me how I know this :> John > Since my gel grips were longer and I didn't want them unsupported at the > bar end I cut the end out of the throttle tube using a drill and then > reaming with a knife till it turned easily. After 38 automobiles and 19 motorcycles over a period of 45 years I have opinions about break-in -- although most of these opinions were shaped by technical editors of _Road & Track_ and _Cycle World_, etc., over these same years, not by personal experience which proves nothing. The one great enemy of new engines is excessive heat and, to a lessor extent, prolonged operation at a constant RPM. Break-in schedules are designed to prevent the average person from overheating their engine. There is no magic in a 4000 RPM limit. My advice: if you have a rapport with things mechanical (especially engines) then do what feels right. If you do not have a rapport with engines, then follow the manual's recommendations. Remember this: Magazine test persons routinely wring maximum performance form new engines with no break-in at all (occasionally they break engines, but not often). Which is not to say you should ride your new motorcycle as though you were testing it for a magazine, but it is to say: be realistic. Friends of mine used to buy new motorcycles on Saturday and race them on Sunday. Sometimes they won. Bottom line: use common sense. I personally haven't had good luck with it in my bike, but Don had a couple of big time mesquite thorn flats this last weekend, and we squeezed 8 oz into his rear after the flat, and it seemed to hold up pretty good, until he got too crazy. Then we just added more air, and rode calmly for a while, and it seemed to fix it up again. I just bought another bottle for myself, so I'm going to keep trying it. It sure would beat fixing a flat by the side of the road, or in the middle of the wilderness, and I've now seen for myself that it can be made to work... UP to my Avon Gripsters. These are tough, and seem quite resistant to mesquite thorns, even without Slime. DOWN to Don's IRC GP-110 rear tire. It suffered several mesquite punctures, and worst of all, seemed to be about 2/3 worn out after only about 1000 miles of hard riding. Nice tread pattern for off-road though. UP to Slime. This got Don's IRC GP-110 back after 600 miles with punctures. This stuff has potential. DOWN to my SuperTrapp IDS Quiet II. After 6 months it is toast. The innards have gone all wacked out, and it was making my bike run like crap. It doesn't seem to be built very ruggedly at all. I just pulled it off tonight, to see if it can be replaced under warranty. DOWN to the whistly stock exhaust system. I put it back tonight on to take it to my dealer to see if it can be replaced under warranty. Sheesh. You'd think bike exhausts were rocket science or something, can't anybody make one that works and keeps on working? DOWN to my DualStar centerstand. The spring on this joker has finally gotten so weak that every time I'd hit a hard bump, it would flop down and hit the ground. I finally ended up bungee cording it up. I think I'm going to take it off, because extra weight is bad. DOWN to the cute little DualStar CO2/mini hand pump. I thought that each CO2 cartridge would inflate 3 tires. It turns out that each CO2 cartridge inflates 1 tire by 3 psi!!!!!! What a joke. The little bitty manual pump feature is cute, but it is so small it took Don about 15 minutes of pumping to get a 4 psi increase. This may be OK for mountain bikes, but not for motorcycles. DOWN to my Scottoiler. This little sharp-shooter started unexpectedly gushing out oil on the way back, and majorly splattered the left side of my rear tire. I tip-toed around left-hand turns after that... UP to the Garmin eMap. Wow. What a navigational tool. Now that I've gone on a trip with one, I'd hate to be without it. UP to my Tomarco Designs windshield. This baby is rugged. A full coverage windshield that can take rugged Baja type off-road riding, and detaches in 3 seconds (literally). UP to my Tomarco Designs adjustable handlebars. Set them down low for comfortable road cruising, then when you get to the rough stuff, set them up high for standing on the pegs action. DOWN to the Kawasaki plastic side covers. When standing up on the pegs for hours on end, these jokers seriously rubbed the inside of my calves raw. Very uncomfortable. I'm going to do something about this. UP to the Moose bash plate. I never worried about the hundreds of bottoming-outs really damaging anything. UP to the Kawasaki rear shock. Hey, it may only be a Kawasaki, but the OEM unit is infinitely better than the piece of crap BMW stuck on my '91 R100GS. UP to the KLR650. One hell of a tough bike, and a blast to ride on the road or through the desert!
