Me and the new KLR took off for the Organ Mountians here in So. New Mexico to the Aguirre Springs Campgrounds. All I took was me, the bike, a sleeping bag, a loaf of rye bread a block of cheese, a pound of pistachios, a pack of hot dogs, and a couple sweaters and socks/underwear. Sure it was a little cold at night, so I wrapped up in the sleeping bag and sweaters and was fine. Only had 2 cooked meals, the rest "as is". I ate well. Hiked a fair bit, and yesterday morning I had the fortune to see three mule deer when I went for my morning constitutional, and when I ate breakfast I looked up and saw a four point mulie buck staring back at the ugly ruffian eating pistachios. Cheap and easy. (Just like me! Astounding!) As some wise guy once said, everyone's ignorant, just of different subjects....or something along those lines. Think it was some wise cowboy that said that, can't be sure tho as my minds gone. And hey! I'm a newbee to this list and the concept of duel-sporting to the degree it's come, and would also appreciate words of wisdom on better than stock exhaust. Also.... on the subject of the secret handshake crap I read abit back...I don't buy it. M'thinks at some time or another everyone gets kindof jaded over time with lists whether it's computer hardware or bikes or whatever. Know that I've needed to be reminded at times that there aren't dumb questions, and a little patience can make a difference. And I'm done rambling. Got one of the stock Kawasaki rack/seat bags...works great! Not waterproof but holds bunches. Also took off the stock handguards last nite. Don't do alot of tight trails, feels alot more natural. Hey, all; As though I needed another vehicle/toy/object cluttering my garage I went out today and wrote a large credit card check for a new '00 KLR. I hold this NG responsible for this act of blatant financial irresponsibility. Seriously, folks, thanks for all the information, replies to dumb questions, etc. As a result the test ride was almost anticlimactic as I knew exactly what to expect. Like the useless front brake, for which I immediately ordered a stainless brake line. Also under consideration are lowering links (will wait until the suspension sacks a bit before making that move) and removing the subfender if I do lower it. The local dealer simply offered me a fantastic deal on what already has a reasonable MSRP -- $4200, no freight, no prep. With my left hand badly needing respite from the King Kong Victory clutch and gas heading toward $2 a gallon the KLR's purchase could be rationalized to the wife, who knows me well enough to argue the point anyway. Her reaction? "You're right, it IS big and ugly." Anyway, thanks again to all of you, hope I can contribute something worthwhile in the future as a payback.
