Hey Matt, You can do Moab in 2 days in the express lane or take longer if you go scenic. Either way, Kansas is 6-8 hrs of Hell. Easiest way to get the wife and kids to let you ride is to get them bikes too. My wife rarely rides , but she has a Yamaha XT250. By boys have a KTM SXR50 and a Suzuki JR50 with an old XR75 on deck. My daughter will probably get the JR50 handed down to her in a year. We have about 400 acres of abandoned quarry to ride about three blocks from my house. The riding is awesome here in central PA. If you have the spare time, come on up. I ride regularly with a list member from Williamsport, and I live near State College. It's not official yet (have some leg work to do), but we're hoping to organize an all KLR weekend for early May and would like to get about a dozen or so riders from PA and the surrounding states to participate. We're thinking about a Fall Foliage Ride too. Also, there are two major "DualSport events" near my home. The first is the AMA Williamson Suzuki "Dirty Dabbers 100 Miles of Bad Road" which is a two day, 200 mile event in late May/early June. The second is the PATRA Seven Mountains Dual Sport, a 90 mile ride through Bald Eagle State Forest usually in late June. Both of these events are non-competetive and fun is had by all. Get them bikes and make it family time. I am new to DS and KLR's but already I have been into the dealership seriously looking into JR50's for my 4 & 5 year olds. I haven't quite decided what would suit my wife well but I am thinking a Sherpa would be great. When she's not quite as into a weekend trip as you are then she'll be much more apt to let you go without much more than flowers and few kind words... and the rest of your Honey Do list being done..... And a promise to spend the weekend with her parents.... Oh and don't forget the new outfit for work.... And the kids need ... Like you Matt, it has been 6 wonderful years on my end, (my wife probably has a different story) but I have figured out that no matter what you want to do, if there is a place for her to fit in and be a part of it then she'll often be happy to go for it. Though, don't overuse that approach. I bought her a new shotgun for sporting clays along with my new labrador, new over/under and decoys.... she saw right through it... go figure. ;) You could always surprise her as well. You can't imagine the surprised look on my wife's face when she came home late from work one day and found a motorcycle on the front walkway. Wait till she see's all the new stuff I bought for it... I can't wait! Actually she expects that sort of thing from me so she doesn't threaten to kill me much anymore. After the day of silence she asked me to teach her how to ride. You can only imagine my excitement. If anyone out there in KLR land knows of a 50 sized dirtbike for sale I would be most interested. $1000 on a new JR50 is really steep considering what I paid for my KLR. Then again I'm quickly approaching $1K on new pieces parts. Thanks Fred! So Mark, what would it take for you to part with the 50? A couple of years ago we had a surgeon on the list, some will remember Birol Say. HE managed to strip a couple valve cover bolt holes. It sounds like you were torquing by feel which is dangerous in this application as the bolt head is larger than usual for the bolt diameter.
