Transalp with about 1800Km? After last year's little adventure on the McKendree Road in mysterious West Virginia, me on my KLR guiding Eddie on his Harley Wide Thing, Eddie has decided that next trip he will join me in dual-sport mode. His brother-in-law is selling this very low-mileage Transalp for $4000 Canadian (I guess that's about $3K US). Reasonable price? Anything special Eddie should watch out for? For those cam box bolts, a torque wrench isn't going to fit in there to get good purchase or a good reading (especially in inch-pounds)....try "finger-tight" and then a quarter-turn, maybe a half. Eastern Kansas wasn't too bad, but in the West: Don't remember a lot of route details, but we got off a superslab to enjoy side roads, and shot West at about 90mph in a Beetle (a real Beetle, and long, long ago). You'd go past 3 silos on the right, a road headed off to the left with some stores and houses, then back to fertile fields for 20 minutes, and then DAMN, there are those 3 silos again! It was something out of the Twilight Zone. Very straight shot. You wouldn't imagine that 90mph in a Beetle could be boring anywhere, but... Eventually, the road T'ed in a corn field, and we had to turn. That's all I remember until - The eventual sight of the Rockies growing slowly out of the horizon (marred only by having to stare at the sun through a streaky windshield) was like awakening from a very odd, very long dream. Colorado Springs made it all worth while, even considering the need to retune that engine. Peaked at 38 in the gear-changes. Dyno-tech said that this meant it was running too rich. I was pleasantly surprised. There was a guy with a mod'd GS500E that only got 43 hp. I think my bike drew as much interest as many of the generic 750's and 900's - only due to the novelty. I sent Eric Jaz scans of the graphs.
