Sounds like the caliper isn't sliding on its guide pins like it's supposed to. The caliper has to able to adjust its lateral position to compensate for pad wear. The caliper is just a hydraulic G-clamp. The two allen bolts that hold the caliper to the carrier (that goes on the axle) retain a metal plate that the caliper can slide in relation to. There are a couple of rubber boot that protect the sliding parts. Maybe these boots are damaged and dirt and/or water has made its way between the sliding parts. There were cheaper places, but they sent samples with their catalog to help us determine what we wanted. Find them at: http://www.rmsheepskin.com/ I elected not to have a custom seat cover made as the cost was too much. I ordered 1 sheepskin and it covers the bike from the gas cap to about 4" beyond the back of the seat. Bill Wright Hotlanta, GA. I just bought myself, after some searching, a (Australian)1996 KLR650. On inspection the bike showed few signs of the problems to come. The bike was originally used on a Western Australian mining site for pump inspection, suggesting little use. The bike was then sold to a dealer at auction to a dealer who specialises in passing bike on to backpackers who want to ride the 7000 ok kilometres to Sydney on the other side of Australia. The bike went cheap (supposedly) because at the dealers the bike would not start due to a problem with the kickstand safety system. The guy who bought it (a German backpacker) and eventually sold it to me went to great pains to show me exactly what he needed to do to fix it, impressing me with his "honesty". Sadly, after agreeing on what was a reasonable price for the general (apparent) condition of the bike, and getting it home a day or two later, I noticed that the fuel tank was dry. No reserve even. Off to the gas station I went and stuffed in some fuel. At this point I noticed that the bike was "pissing" fuel out of the drain tube. So I had a close look at the "screw" at the bottom of the carbie and assuming it was a faulty drain screw, as it looked like it had had a hard life, over used even. Is this even a screw or is it a valve (the carbie is a CVB40)? So I tried the dodgy quick check and plugged the hose up with a self tapping screw. Fuel then started flowing freely from a "yellow garden hose" (It looks like a temp fix to me) that was routed so it was neatly hidden behind the frame. It is connected to the top of the carbie on the left hand side and I have left it at that for the moment. Currently the fuel is running from the bike/carbie as fast as gravity will allow. I'm going to take the bike to a Kawasaki dealer tomorrow and eagerly await the bad news. Just wondering if there are any guys who have run into this before? And is it as simple as a carbie kit.... or is there more???? Oh and suffice to say that I have already tried contacting the backpacker. Bet you know what happened......... I have to agree with the Lights On people on this issue. Riding around in 1970 with headlights off at will I wasn't able to see the benefit of having the headlight on all the time. All bikes had switched headlights then. It seems to me that about 1979 it became law in California (at least that mc's built after '79 have lights on as built) and as we got into the eighties I began to have motorcycles built after that time......at which time I still didn't notice the benefit. Then I got a fixer upper XL600 in 1992 and it didn't have the headlight wired into the ignition switch.....it seemed like cars didn't see me, and were always trying to run me down. It didn't take me long to figure out why that was.......no headlight. It makes a Big Difference.....the difference between night and day (or life and death). Bill (likes his headlights). The first question the cop ask was, "Did you have your head light on?" Answer: YES. "How fast were you going?" ANSWER: "Can't you see I'm bleeding to death, call an ambulance!" The cop proceeded to ask several eye witnesses about my headlight and whether I appeared to be speeding and riding recklessly. All confirmed that it was drivers fault.
