Well prepped the bike for a trip to Copper Canyons and as Fred suggests did a little test riding to shake the bike down, Tuesday flattened new front with a large cactus needle, Wednesday blew a radiator hose,( go figure Fred) found you can replace it with 19mm heater hose running the bike a couple miles without water ruined my new mechanical seal, called the nearest dealer 40 miles away and he actually had the seal and so I stripped down the bike changed the seal put it back together test rode it again no problems. All right, I'm jumpin' in here. I paid a dealer twice (yes, apparently I am stupid) to do 600 and 6k service. Suspecting a not quite strong running machine at 12k service time, I opted to do it myself as I didn't care for the attitudes shown at the Kaw dealer. Upon opening the machine up, it certainly appeared that no one had ever been in there (int gaps at .002 and .003. exh at .004 ea. side, and an old spark plug which didn't look as if it or the inch deep baked dirt in the plug recess had ever been changed)....yes, just speculation, but I believe they charged me $200 for service not once, but twice, without opening the cam box. I can't support people like this. They have to steal from other suckers now. It's the New Balonium. The way goods and services is changing. Rip-offs abound, and it's up to you to not support them. I'd like to have a dealer I believe in, but I don't. Sorry. BBQ Bill Keepin his bikes out of shops. Leavin good tips in the restaurants, where you can witness the service. I agree with Fred in that I`ve seen the majority of problems caused by the filter being installed backwards. As long as the filter is large enough to not reduce fuel flow, there is no reason for an inline filter to cause problems. I replaced mine this spring and the amount of debris I saw in it, that DIDN`T make it to my carb, was impressive. I always use clean fuel, but ride in dry, dusty conditions a lot and it seems to make it into my tank. Another idea in my case might be to place a filter on the end of the fuel tank vent line, which may be allowing some dust to get into the tank.
