One of the things that swayed me from large bags like the Touratechs which I had for awhile, is that you loose all discipline in packing lite and tend to overpack. I just felt that is was against my motorcycle ethic to carry everything but the kitchen sink on a trip. I know that trans continent trips require this stuff, but for a week or so on the road, I think soft bags suffice. Heck my tail trunk is even overkill for me. I remeber at the FSSNOC rally in Idaho a few years ago, I fellow road from Louisiana on a GB500 with nothing more in the way of luggage than a tank bag! Think lite. Don't know about the cylinder treatment, but I do know that the gear driven cam is much nicer than the chain unit in the KLR. My KLX was extremely cold blooded and needed a good rejetting to be acceptable. The seat is hard and thin, so a wider seat would also be desireable. Other than that, enjoy the ride. I've heard of some using the Wolfman Explorer tank bag made for BMW GS's, but does fit on the KLR too. However, there is some outstanding dirt road riding out there and some nice places to camp...there is a hot spring near Bear Creek Camgpround (don't know its status nowadays) and there are some good water crossings out there....best to go in summer if you wish to traverse the area over to Stonyford. There is an extensive network of off-road vehicle trails, and many many miles of dirt roads...it's the little known wilderness area of N. CA.
