I got the 2000 KLR650 the week before. Hers is a kick. She's about 5'7" and is a bit short for mine. She handles hers like a breeze. It's also fun to zoom around on for me. It's about a hundred pounds lighter than my 650 and that makes a bit of a difference. Power-wise there's no comparison and she doesn't like that part, we're both very competitive....especially towards each other. But some listers report slightly leaking seals without much concern, and there's always the 'maxi-pad' fix! Is there much chance of them just disintegrating, or is it usually a more gradual thing? Actually, I never "offered" anything. I commented on the "theory" behind a 4-stroke engine (ala suck, squeeze, bang, blow) and why it is necessary to sometimes re-jet, as a response to the following question... > I keep hearing people talking about re- > jetting when changing the pipe....WHY? I was never asked a technical "jetting" question regarding whether or not the original poster should do it or not. Nor have I offered advice on how anyone should set up their bikes in this regard. This kind of technical expertise, I leave to the experts on the list. > In stock configuration, the plug on my bike running mostly at > sea level and it is completely deviod of any color. I'd tell you to re-jet, but I would just be offering you my unsolicited "opinion". > which you may [not] necessarily experience any symptoms for except for > a lower power compared to one that is jetted correctly. So you agree with me then, as this is what I said when I wrote, "That's not to say that I couldn't improve performance by re-jetting... I probably could... and will eventually... " > Changing the flow > with filters and exhaust, will exacerbate the condition and could slowly > burn the top of the piston away. I have seen this happen especially if you > get some occasional pinging or your timing is slightly off. My bike has much more power than it did before and it doesn't ping at all. That's not to say that my bike isn't operating in a mild state of "lean-ness"... I'm just not experiencing any lean symptoms for the time being. > To suggest that > it isn't necessary may be a disservice. And to suggest that it IS may also be... It is really not that difficult. If you have the service manuals you are all set because you are Borg. Don't be overwhelmed just take it a step at a time. Make sure you have plenty of time (patience - don't rush) and a roomy work area. If you clean the outside of the top and shifter side of the engine very good before you remove the valve cover you can avoid changing the oil again. Should you need to leave your valve cover off and unattended while waiting for shims or clarification advice from the list then cover the engine with a clean towel. Use the following link. http://www.geocities.com/~klrdsn/page27.html You have an A14 so you can ignore step 6 unless you need to remove the cams to change shims you can do it after step 11. Again - take you time and be very careful not to drop anything into the engine. Do not over tighten anything.
