Anyone gonna be > near their computer that day in case I have a quick question? > > Thanks tremendously, > Raamses > First of all congratulations on your willingness to tackle the job. All advice posted so far is good. I'll add a few things. The most affordable in/lb (ft/lb won't do) non Chinese torque wrench is found at Home Depot (Husky..$20) However it has a 3/8" drive so you'll need a universal joint adapter to access some rear cam clamp bolts. This will effect the torque reading. A Sears unit is at least twice that and I believe not any better. Sears doesn't sell a 1/4". A 1/4" drive is available from Harbour Freight for about $30 but it's Chinese. MAKE SURE YOU STUFF RAGS IN THE CAVITIES OF THE ENGINE. Many listers have dropped bolts in there (not good). Use a small ice/dental pick and pliers or a small magnet to remove shims. You won't have to remove the cams; just loosen the bolts holding them part way. When re-assembling apply anti-seize to all bolts to prevent electro-something corrosion. Also apply same to spark plug. Make sure the cam cover is lined up and the bolts drop in before you start tightening (by hand at first). Don't over-torque. Question: I read in Carl Elden's night mails that he advises to change the balancer chain every 30 k. He also said that the chain would cost around $200.00 (OUCH!) Not a big problem (yet) I've found it at $89. CANADIAN Dollars plus S&H. (Thanks for the pointer, Arne) Now, do I also need to replace the cam chain at 30K? This chain is a lot more expensive than the balancer chain, dudes. Last time I checked valve clearing the marks on the cam sprockets were perfectly horizontal, which I think indicates that the chain is in fairly good condition (also the chain tensioner had quite a ways to go), but that was 5K ago. If the chain is fairly OK, is it a good idea to replace only the balancer chain and then save some dough and change the other one in say 6 months? the bike would have some 43 K on it by then. Another thing. Do you have to take out the rotor to change the cam chain too? Please help. Redying the bike for my Alaska trip is costing a lot more than I expected! It is in fact putting the whole proyect in danger!!! I think this may shed some light on the 'political correctness" and overall timidity observed earlier on the oil subject....those boys in Washington have got us trained not to do anything to offend our coporate sponsors. If you want to read a funny book, with lots of political relavance to what 's going on in the USA nowadays, read "There's nothing in the road but dead armadillos and yellow lines" by Jim Hightower.
