Reminds me of a little story...NKLR... I was about 13 and becoming a young hunter. My dad was exploring his roots and trying to become the hunter he never was. He bought a big Grumman Canoe..17' and took us duck hunting. There we were with a shiny aluminum canoe in duck and goose paradise...Horicon Marsh. I didn't know any better and he didn't either. For those not in the know, one doesn't set foot in the marsh without everything camo. We paddled all day from one end of the marsh to the other. It was memorable and wonderful..the smells of the muck every time you pulled the paddle out of the thick goo are with me as I write. My dad shot one fowl...a coot, a lowly mudhen. At the end of the day, at dusk, we were crossing a big bay and my dad asked me if the shooting hours were closed. In that way that young boys have of stretching the truth, I "read" the regulations the way I wanted them to read and said excitedly, "dad, we have 10 more minutes" (actually, shooting had been over for 15 minutes already). Just then, a beautiful Mallard drake (a Greenhead) flew low overhead, I urged my father on, "dad, take him...take him." My dad, upped with his Model 21 Winchester, the only lasting gift he had from his father and let off a pair of shots. The roar from the gun contrasted strangely with the silence in the marsh. He missed with both shots. We looked at each other for a brief moment sensing something was wrong. Then a strong male voice bellowed out of some distant reeds, "hey you dumb f--- shooting is closed...come on over and get a dead Mallard...pause...you out to be dipped in shit!" I'll never forget that moment, the waves of shame and humiliation that washed over me in contrast to the glorious day we had enjoyed. My father...publicly humiliated and ridiculed by peers in front of his young son...and, I was...I was at least partly to blame. We didn't say a word to each other but simply began to paddle. I thing tears welled up for me and I struggled for my father not to see. After a couple of minutes, my dad, doing most of the paddling at this point, simply said, "makes a person feel kind of cheesy doesn't it?" You're right Juan...this was not our finest hour... So far I am leaning toward getting another set of GP-110s as they are long wearing and low cost, but the Avon Gripsters sound good too. Also I am considering not changing the stock/original chain, even after 15k of use for this 7k trip. I have been "religious" about lubing it every 200-300 miles, and both it and the sprockets show very little wear. What do ya'll think? Is it wise to wait? Please keep up the good advice listens. Sam's had a pretty good deal on some Unidens with the standard 14 channels and an LCD readout with VOX capability as a bonus. The radios were only 2 for $79.95! They went and got a VOX boom mic/ear speaker from Radio Shack, so they have about only $80.00 into the combination per radio. We tried them with full face helmets on, and running 60mph, and they worked fine for well over a mile seperation according to our odometers. Wind noise was very minimul using Arai Signet helmets, and the mic system is adjustable to make it pick up less wind noise. They would start losing contact about 1 1/2-1 3/4 miles line-of-sight; and at a little over 1 mile not line-of-sight Not too bad for a cheap setup. The radios say they last for 30 hours on 3 AA batteries. We had them on for about 7 hours and the battery meter hadn't moved to the middle yet. Seems like a good deal and combination with the Radio Shack mic system. Is anybody else using a similiar setup? I've been using a handheld 40 channel CB on trips with other riders, but the range is only like 1/4 mile on a good day.I think I'll go with the FRS radios too, if nobody has any real bad reports about using them...
