Yo peoples, I'm curious about the mass of a 650 piston, to compare it to the new 1st oversize 600 piston I've had sitting in my cupboard for years. If you could include the mass of the rings and gudgeon then so much the better. Old or new doesn't matter, I'm trying to figure out if the balance will be significantly different. I'm still tossing around the idea of fitting a 650 piston to my 600 whenever I get around to giving the engine a reco, to make the engine a true 600cc. As a sidenote, I did a base dyno run on the 600 the other day with the bike in bone stock trim. Not bad at all for a smoky old thing, it was fun watching the sparks come out the muffler. I don't have the printout in front of me as the dyno op's printer wasn't working, but the 600 was putting out enough poke to likely make a few 650 pilots wonder what benefit their extra 87cc is. With the mods I'm planning, the 600 can only get gruntier. And then I'll recondition it... Followers of my exhaust project will be amused to hear that I picked up another different muffler to try, this one is from a Yammie 250 EXUP and it looks very interesting. It should look real horn when bolted up. As for flow, the dyno will tell eventually. The EXUP muffler is rivetted together, so it should be much easier to get into and hack if necessary. Don't worry, I'm giving the Nikon a workout taking pics along the way. Once the Dynojet kit goes in the carby I'll give it another run and then can start the exhaust side moving in earnest. If only the car didn't leave a puddle of coolant in the garage, then things might happen just a bit faster >-| $$$ Mister_T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 23:07:55 -0400 (EDT) From: miketortuga@webtv.net (Michael Stecyk) Subject: Re: (klr650) Re: Triumph Tiger...NKLR--Mailng list Dear Mr Kurt /List A-Triumph Tiger list has been operational since last week--Info---//www.onelist.com Mike- Montreal--40 members so far ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 20:15:57 -0700 From: "Arne Larsen" Subject: Re: (klr650) 500 mile check-up 6000 RPM's away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can subscribe at: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/cmbt_touring The list is for all brands of bikes and riders from any part of the world. The list language is English and it is not moderated so content may not be suitable for minors. The purpose of the list is to provide a focused discussion for riders of dual purpose bikes regarding issues such as: - - suitable bikes for dual purpose touring - - equipment - - luggage - - navigation - - first aid - - organizing and meeting riders for your own trips - - trip stories - - administrative issues for foreign travel The hope is that this may provide more focus and information on these common aspects of dual purpose motorcycle touring than currently exists on brand focussed lists. There will be a searchable list archive and I'll publish more details to the list. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. The 101.6 mm Cosworth pist in my eng. is 533 gram's = 85 gram's lighter and is much smoother If this eng was bal at factory , the proper bal % would be 50%. That being the case this lighter pist has the effect of changing the balance factor to 60%. My experance say's this is better!!!! At any speed on hiway the production KLR mirrors are fine with this lighter pist!!!!!!! Hope this helps. I have a Wiseco 103.124 mm pist = 693 cc eng this would requier a O.S. sleeve and head gask't. I talked to Mike Walburn at DS, and he told me that things weren't right with it and to send it back to him so he can figure out the problem. Long story short, it turned out to be a mistake in the design and manufacture of the particular batch my stand came out of. It did take him a while to get the stand back to me because he had to wait until he made the next batch of stands so he could reconstruct mine (and several others I think). Although I would have liked to have the stand back quickly, he kept in touch with me and let me know when I would realistically would have it by. He needed to wait till the next batch because he had to retool his machines to address the problems his last batch had. From our conversations, I gathered that this was not a quick or easy task. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I finally got the stand back and quickly put it on. It worked perfectly and looks great to boot. There were several changes made to my stand, probably the neatest was that there is a notch cut into the top crossmember so that it won't make contact with the little bolt bump on the engine case. This was a smart move, considering several listers were worried about excessive pressure put on the case by the stand, myself included. Mike said that this really isn't anything to worry about, but he was nice enough to change it anyway and address his customers concerns directly. Also the top brace under the crossmember is scalloped and has nice looking lightening cutouts. Today, Mike called me just to see if I got the stand on and to see how it was working. That was nice of him. The funny thing is that I've been talking to him often enough over the course of the last few months that I think I can walk into his shop and start making these stands myself! Anywho, just wanted to let everyone know how this all turned out. I would've liked the stand back quickly, but the final product was worth both the price and the wait in my opinion. To me, Mike proved himself to be extremely dedicated to what he's doing. You may get lucky and find an old Acerbis platic tank for the 600 but don't bet on it. AFAIK, Acerbis only made their much bigger 600 tanks in 600A-1 colours (they never made a red one to match my 600B-1). The Acerbis 600 tank was big enough and shaped to replace the radiator air scoops. I've never had much problem with the kickstarts once I got the kick procedure down pat. As far as your fender bag is concerned, I would look into a moose fender bag for ~35$ from dennis kirk. Great bag and it beats the cost from kawasaki, which was 120$ for the one on my KLR600 (A-hee, Ha. ha... ha. yeah right). You'll have to cut some small holes in it to match the mount points on the fender and put some bolts in to hold it down. Your carb has 2 cables for safety reasons. If the return spring breaks or if the throttle body / butterfly valve sticks you can pull the throttle the other way and close the throttle. I leave my petcock on all the time. Some people turn them off in case of leaking from the needle valve or to reduce vapor emissions. I leave mine on because if I didnt I'd forget to turn it on every time. I read with interest, the note about someone adding a kickstarter to an electric start bike. Is the opposite possible?? Can I add electric start to my 86 KLR250? With all the trouble I'm having with this bike, I'm beginning to doubt that I'm a kickstart kind of girl. On another front, the bag of tools (or whatever it was) that is supposed to be on the tail of my bike is missing. I have four holes and some exposed wires to the brake light there. Was it tools or just storage? I take it, some of you guys have installed luggage racks there instead. How does that work? Where are your tools? I see two throttle cables coming from the handgrip to the carb, but I only see one moving when I open the throttle. What does the second cable do? Lastly, is it necessary/desirable to shut the fuel off when parking? I checked for leaks when I first got the bike. When I didn't see any, I left the fuel on. Good idea?
