I have done this, it's really a bummer. The screws are very soft. I replace mine with stainless....I replaced everything I could with stainless! Here is how I got mine out. In my tool box I have what was once a pin punch about 1/8 in in diameter on the business end. It has been broken off to about 3/4 in after the taper on the small end. I ground the small end so that it has a tiny chisel end on it. With this tool and a SMALL hammer I first tapped downward with the correct size Phillips screwdriver to loosen the cosmic force binding such problems together. Then with the aforementioned homemade teeny tiny chisel I struck a sharp dent into the edge of the screw....in a radius with the center. Then very carefully I tapped the dent with the chisel in a sideways, tangential fashion, When done carefully this works often. Bear in mind this is a finesse thing and you must hold your tongue just right. If you try to MACHO this it won't work. I would advise against drilling unless its a last resort and done by a skilled individual with a drill press. I found some stainless countersunk screws at the boat store....West Marine I think. Be cool, if you get frustrated walk away for a while to avoid co-lateral damage. Everything happens in its own time. Box 698, Sandia Park, New Mexico, 87047), Eldon Carl reports on the results of an intensive study of his 54,500 mile KLR engine. Here is a summary: 1. KLR's ridden hard in dirt and on street will need rebuild at 60K. Rebuild may need cam and balancer chains, all balancer sprockets, 4 balancer bearings, balancer/idler shaft and bearing, new rings and hone (or rebore and oversized piston). Eldon believes this figure can be improved if an owner acts on the oil level gauge problem and keeps the oil at optimum level (10 ounces above sight glass). Scott Waxman, engineer studying the same engine thinks it would be possible to make 100K if: 1. Street riding only w/o cruising over 70-75 mph 2. Oil change every 2,500 miles and filter every 5,000 3. Change cam chain, balancer chain, balancer idler shaft and bearing every 33K (very important) 4. Maintain engine oil level above the window (add 10-12 ounces when you see a bubble in the glass) 5. Keep air cleaner clean and oiled Kurt Salt Lake City ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 13:47:47 -0700 From: "Jeff & Lisa Walker" Subject: Re: (klr650) NKLR- Running shoes >> >Light-weight... Army docs said that I didn't have much cartilage left in one of my knees. Probably has something to do with my over 150 airborne jumps, and having to run a minimum of 5 miles per day, often in boots and with a rucksack. Who knows? I've laid off the running, but don't have time for a good workout on the bicycle anymore. I'm hoping I can go back to running without the pain. At least you got something out of it besides pain. That reminds me, its getting towards nesting season for the pheasants around here, and last week I saw two roosters in a cock fight. Definitely something you don't see very often in the wild. I sat and watched for over 40 minutes, before one of them gave up. My favorite game bird, hands down. Oh, another funny thing; some quail made a nest in an arborvitae tree in my back yard. They have literally been driving my golden retriever and Brittany spaniel crazy. The britt spends all day with her nose stuck in that tree, and occasionally she manages to flush them, much to mine and the quail's amusement, as she goes nuts when they fly onto the neighbor's roof. I haven't ever seen a more "birdy" dog, its going to be a great season next year.
