Thanks to all of you for the help and advice that has enabled me to turn my machine into a third world tourer. You folks are the best. I'm not trying to stir up the proverbial hornet's nest on oil. Just sharing my experience for those enquiring minds...I use Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic in my KLR and am fully happy with the results. The one noticeable difference between using M1 and conventional oils and blends, is the transmission shifts smoother which leads me to think that the engine is probably getting lubed better also. Then came along M1 "tri-synthetic" formula which is reportedly replacing the traditional M1 to meet the new SK standard. "Hotlanta" Bill forwarded a report that the new formula is lacking the zinc/phosorous additive package that most of the SJ rated oils shed when they evolved from the SG/SH ratings. I believe this to be true because lo and behold my KLR transmission is "crunchy" with the new M1 formula as if with other oils I've tried. The post Bill forwarded suggested that using the "New Car Formula" STP oil treatment that comes in a black bottle, would restore the additives lacking in the new M1. I've always been skeptical of oil additives, thinking they might be a ripoff and stayed away. But I figured it was worth a try before I abandoned the M1 for a good quality motorcycle specific oil as Mike of Dual Star recommends (I hold his opinions in high regard). The STP was $1.79 and a bottle is good for two KLR oil changes. I added a half bottle to the crankcase and as soon as the treatment mixed with the oil, I noticed an immediate improvement in the smoothness of the gear shifts. This leads me to believe that indeed the STP makes the new tri-synthetic M1 like the old M1. It'll be interesting to note how long it takes for the STP treatment to wear out. Skip mentioned that some oil companies are considering re-introducing the SG/SH ratings for motorcycle applications. Let's hope this turns out to be the case. The whole matter is very frustrating. Unfortunately, comparing the issue to the automotive benchmark is a little like the apples and oranges theory. If the percentage of bikes on the road equalled cars, then the turn-around time on service would be shortened drastically, as the bike would be the primary vehicle for a large majority of people. But because it's treated as a secondary/pleasure vehicle, it's just not considered a high priority. Just my theory... Larger tire = no lowering links, rubbing on certain exhausts, etc.. >satpid question- what's NKLR mean? > I'm not sure what "satpid" means, but your question is not stupid either... ;^) NKLR means "non KLR". Some listers have their e-mail set up to only read KLR specific postings. Anything NKLR, they either have it automatically deleted, or sent to a different in-box where they can look at it at a later time. In this way, when valid (but non KLR) discussions go on at length, the person who only wants to read KLR specific info doesn't have to do any sifting. Another tip to make your short posts more relevant (ie. your question about the exhaust packing) is to snip enough of the topic to remind the readers the issue you are referring to when asking a question. By doing this you will get more accurate and increased responses to your postings. Not a big deal, but in wanting to accurately answer your packing Q, I had to look back into my deleted messages folder and find the original message to make certain the exhaust was a Supertrap. Like I said, it's no big deal - just one of those things that make life a little simpler.
