Went for a ride to try out some things... 1-Ortlieb dry bags, for a $173.00, ok, I guess. I might have had high expectations. I bought these based on list recommendations. While they appear to be very well made, I find them a bit on the small side and somewhat clumsy to use. I solved the stay problem by utilizing a set of 1/2 OD and 5/8 OD chrome bumpers, leftover from my now sold Goldwing. I had them hanging around the shed. Using muscle power, I bent them to fit, and now have a nice set of chrome stays to protect these bags. I hope they're as waterproof as claimed. 2- New trunk, bought 2 "action packers" from Walmart, $6.96 each. Mounted them to my rear rack, one on top of the other, hard plastic construction, definitely waterproof, light, and cheap. Bottom one will stow gear carried at all times, tire repair kit, 1st aid, etc, top one will carry stuff like camera, binoculars, etc. These are somewhat lockable. Plastic is after all, plastic. 3- Avon AM24. mounted these front and rear. Street traction is beautiful. Quiet. Of course I'd like to test in the wet, but it hasn't rained when I can ride since I put these on. Dirt, is a bit of uncertainty, but for my upcoming rides I anticipate 95% on road stuff. 4- O-ring mirror mounts. On a whim I found some heavy 3/8" ID o-rings and placed them on the mirror threaded shaft. Damn if it didn't reduce the vibration by a good 1/3. Cost me nothing. 5- 16t sprocket. It was a mistake for me. Puts the rpm's right at about 3700 for the speed I cruise around it, seems abit too luggish. The very hilly terrain caused excessive usage of 4th gear to maintain 55/60 mph. Going back to my 15t. I don't ride anything more than 55mph 2 laners with this bike as the "superslabs" suck. 6- The new Kawasaki windshield. I prefer to wear my open face helmet. I found my head right in the zone of maximum turbulence. After 250 miles of major head shake, I pulled over and removed it. AHHHHH quiet, shake free riding. Clear air. I am 6'1" tall and more body than leg, so I sit tall in the saddle. No windshield actually makes this thing seem a bit more.....wild, if you will. I like the look. No windshield for me on this. I eat more bugs, but spend less for food, 8^). 7- ...and finally.....368 miles of strickly 2 lane, speeds between 30 and 60, solo but with about 2 loaded bags and about 25lbs on the rear rack, my KLAW returned 51.11 miles per gallon. I AM IMPRESSED. Next week, once over maintainence, cable lube, inspection and such, and Allegheny, here I come. Sometimes they're sucked on their pretty good (as they should be), but their will be no corrosion either. Also, to take off the left exhaust cam cap, you also have to undo the left intake cap as well and take both connected caps off as a single unit. Put them back in the same way. >And by the way, I notice in past postings a lot of people have said that >they cannot fit their 3/8" drive torque wrench + 10mm socket onto the cam >bolts because the bike frame gets in the way. I answered this question wrong some months back in the archives and love this opportunity to correct myself. Bend aluminum cold. Aluminum is a very strange metal that actually becomes brittle with heat. I found this out when heating and straightening my skid plate. I had a hold of a section with a pair of tongs and it actually crumbled right off. Had to have an aluminum expert dude re-weld and fill it in for me. He said NEVER heat aluminum to bend it. Bend it cold. So try and straighten the lever. If it works - great. If it breaks - know that heat would not have helped. Then get some Acerbis Rally Pro hand-guards. The list can guide you through it. Tell us when you're ready to go. Jon (scratched A13) Jon- I use the Dupli-Color touch up paint found at most auto parts stores. SF GM 481 is pretty close. It's called Medium Dk. Lichen. It's a little darker than the original color on the engine. You might find a closer match if you look further into it than I did.
