I probably would 1)With the battery charged(and installed) and a meter on it, see what the meter says when you try to start it...and/or 2) With battery installed, tank off, seat off.......before hitting the starter(while you still have lights), variously go around, one by one and wiggle every connection you can-----seeking one that is weak and failing under load. Looking through an old issue of Motorcycle Consumer news I came across a short article on the "Battery Monitor" by Electrical Connections Company. I called Lewis, the owner/operator and he gave me enough information to conclude this device might fill our need for an easy to install and simple (no moving parts) device to provide information on the charging system. It is a three LED device that indicates green, yellow or red for the state of the battery. I have one of these devices coming in the mail and will try it out and provide a review of the device as well as instructions for installing. Question: Has anyone on the LIST used one of these devices? Any other products used that LIST members like? Comments? Does it move more freely under the conditions in which the clearances are measured? I mean when inserting the feeler guage, it is possible to jam any size in there if you really crank on it because the valve spring will compress, right? Could the out of spec reading have resulted from my heavy handed feeler guage? Should I take an angle grinder to the cam lobes and call it a warranty problem? Just wondering.. If this will not support the new set up i.e.. too lean...will this burn the exhaust valves ? Will there be a noticable power improvement or will I just loose the tweet... Were planning on having her go thru the MSF course again next month.I rode the bike back to work today after lunch and it rides pretty good its nothing like the 650 but it has adequate power for what it is.Its kinda hard not to exceed the 4k limit for break-in.In 6th gear at 4k it equals 40mph. Your invasive cardiologist is consulting the list again. Any heart problems? I've been following the list (about 5K mails) from abroad. It was so boring (watching without touching). Israel (Metzoke Dragot, Dead Sea), Paris (Medecins Sans Frontieres "Doctors Without Borders"), Kosovo (Macedonia and Albenia Refugee Camps), Sweden (Huddinge University), Austria (Wien and St. Wolfgang) and back to Istanbul. Although I had my baby delivered to refugee camps, I couldn't play with her at all, just rude sex. For the last 15 days I've been making her up by stealing from my sleeping hours since I also have a private laboratory(modest), two children, thousands of hobbies and social activities (I'd rather be a hammer than a nail) and I'm known as a researcher in cardiology etc. etc. etc. That's enough bombastic talk. KLR "mine is known as BRL" is a fantastic machine. Very reliable, very tough, very romantic even under war conditions. She is a Marfanic, coquettish, susceptible and slender tomboy but she deserves every effort to keep her alive. Some of my last findings: - - Bridgestone Trail Wing 42 is 60/40 on/off is 10 times better than OEM K750. It sticks better in wet conditions. Keep checking tire pressures everyday for at least ten days when they are new(expands very slowly I think). For a traditional approach Dunlop Trailmax (Australian model OEM type) is a logical experience. When changing tires soapy water is a must "an outdoor sportsman always keeps soap and water close". - - My best way of chain lubrication is: Spray the rollers in the middle with MoS2 liquid grease (MolySlip LQG, England) after cleaning with Kerosene "not gasoline or diesel fuel at least be careful and dry the chain in minutes since all contain cleaner additives acting badly on o-rings plus these two are stronger solvents than kerosene" , wipe the excess with a lint free towel and apply white textile machinery grease (MolySlip TMG, England) with a toothbrush until all of the chain is covered with a thin layer. This is enough for about 600-700 km under dry road conditions and textile grease is somewhat dust-proof (Have you ever seen a textile factory? Dust is a essential part of atmosphere). The myth of "o-ring chain is factory oiled" is not a piece of nonsence but when you take a closer look you can easily see that it just seals only one side -between the pin and the bushing- the roller on the bushing still needs lubrication. Although I haven't test it yet but probably it infiltrates and leaks out between the inner side plate and bushing interlocking. When you grease the chain you fill the test tube it forms but the chain rotates and empties somewhat. Of course it's much better to have a test tube "one end closed" than a pipe. So I fill the tube with liquid grease "MoS2 sticks there and it's known as a bearing rescuer even bone dry" and cover the non-stainless steel (why?) chain with a clean margarine. No mess. Sorry, I made a mess.
