Hey Birol!!! Welcome back! We were wondering what happened to you. Glad you decided to come back home and to the list. How is your KLR doing? Still running it without the muffler? I had a customer in my shop from Switzerland the other day. He was telling me about a disco in Istanbul that had a bunch of cars stacked around with tires burning and televisions inside the cars. Sounded too weird to me. Do you know of this disco? Thanks Darrel. Your photos of the Posse trip are awesome...I missed a great one. If rapping your pipe doesn't produce any carbon, leave the drain bolts off while you putt down to the store. I tried this on one of our rides and the soot dumped on the swing arm. It's probably not a good idea if you go offroad. Skip's pipe diagram shows it's possible for sparks to escape. Water goes in the bottom, grounds in a little percolator type deal in the bottom piece, top screws on and the steam goes up through the grounds, up the shaft in the middle of top container and condenses into that lovely dark nectar? I have one, it was given to me by my mother in law several years ago. I don't think that she got it at REI. I've used it both at home on the stovetop, and in the field on my propane burner, when I had vehicle support for carrying extra stuff. I love that thing! Holding up very well, but the motor burns some oil, no visible smoke though, just magically consumes 500 cc's every tankful. Runs excellent though. I'm thinking that this bike was a summer time only bike by the original owner, and not maintained very well, hence the oil consumption. Possibly it was never broken in properly. I've only owned it for a year, bought it from the original owner for a song. I plan on doing a ring, cylinder hone and valve lapping job at the end of summer. Clutch slipped marginally (only under full throttle heavy load applications) with synthetic oil, if the friction disks are within specs, I'll just replace the clutch springs and that should fix it. The rear shock has shown no sign of sagging or leaking, and I weigh 230 lbs and ride hard-core dirt trails. I've replaced the stock fork springs for Progressives, replaced the fork boots, brake pads and rotors, wheel bearings, sprockets and chain, tires (IRC GP-1's), Fastline SS brake line, Moose bash plate, Maier Pro -Woods handguards, Kawasaki +4 windshield. Oh yeah, one of the fork seals leaks a tad, but not enough to really worry me. I love my bike, and fully expect it to last me many, many more miles. Oh-yeah, I should be getting my SU racks any day now, so those will soon be bolted up, along with my version of the cooler luggage (thanks Kurt!). I should mention that except for the Maier handguards and tires, the rest of the bike was totally stock when I got my mitts on it. I have no clue if the previous idiot owner did the muffler maintenance. I've done it twice, once just after I bought the bike, and just recently. I've put almost 6000 miles on the bike. I broke one of the bolts off last time, so I'm a little worried about that. I really didn't notice anything except dirty water coming out of the holes, (this was after I washed the bike), no major carbon or anything. Maybe they changed the internal muffler design through the years? Load test that battery. I would suspect that your voltage drops to near zero when you thumb the throttle. A good battery under load should only drop to about 9.6 volts under load. Consider this: You think that your battery is charged when you turn on the key, because it lights up the neutral light headlight and taillight right? These don't draw a whole lot of current, and probably in the daylight you may think that your headlight is strong, but its hard to tell candlepower with just the eye. Anyway, you thumb the start button, and bam, huge current draw that instantly drains what little reserve your dying battery had, and after that it seems like your entire electrical system is dead. Pretty small plates in that battery, not a whole hell of a lot of electrolyte in the cells either. Anyway, that's what I suspect. BTW, a battery in good order fully charged should read about 12.4-12.6 volts.
