Cheap tents are nice...as long as the weather is mild enough that you dont realy need a tent. :) My Vortex 2 vs. various K-Mart, Wally-World and Sears tents in a hammering thundterstorm at the Georica Mountain Rally several years ago proved to be no contest: I slept dry, everybody else got soaked. I am something of a cheapskate by nature, but I still say spend a little money on mission-critical gear such as sleeping bags (big Wiggy's fan, here) and tents. Ya I know - keep it to youselves... =^) I slept the first night with my head in the vestibule. Thinking that there were creepy-crawly things around I decided to go tent shopping. I found an awesome, one Arne/Eric person, tent for $200 USD. It's called a Slickrock and it's made by North Face. They make good stuff. Very well ventilated. Packs incredibly small - easily fit in the bottom of my aluminum pannier. And fit me well with room for extra gear. Arne inside.
