I strongly agree that one should not skimp on tents and sleeping bags. One never can tell when the weather can change. I've been snowed on in the middle of summer! And socked in for days in my tent due to rain. North Face makes excellent tents. Try one of their free-standing three pole tents. Prices are $200-$300. One evening, as I slept nice and dry, the people next door were being slapped in the face by the top of their dome tent bending under the wind. It finally tore from fatigue, letting in the rain. I've seen other tents literally shred. I would NEVER buy a K-Mart tent unless I could hop in my car and drive home if it started to rain too badly. A good tent will last many many years. Same with good sleeping bags. Just not worth skimping on. Cheap tents are nice...as long as the weather is mild enough that you dont realy need a tent. :) My Vortex 2 vs. various K-Mart, Wally-World and Sears tents in a hammering thundterstorm at the Georica Mountain Rally several years ago proved to be no contest: I slept dry, everybody else got soaked. I am something of a cheapskate by nature, but I still say spend a little money on mission-critical gear such as sleeping bags (big Wiggy's fan, here) and tents. Buy them like your life depends on them. Who knows? All I can say is there is a noticeable difference. Funny, my KLR started acting up today, it went into a full-out-Super-TT-motard-power-slide and I swear officer, I didn't do it on purpose! I know that for a fact that as limited as my father's faculties were in his last days, he wanted to die. He pulled out his feeding tube purposefully, and left a living will. I might make it there one day, I might not. I have to say that what I wrote I said in jest, only half seriously. It is totally true that the great majority of the fed budget goes for social security and medicare. The next largest payment goes for interest on the national dept, and then military and then governmental salaries. Its interesting to note that welfare only made up about less than 7 % of the total budget, yet people everywhere were screaming for welfare reform. I myself served in one modern war, in the Gulf, and one minor conflict, in Somolia. As for euthanizing old folks, that was also a joke, although I have very personal feelings about it. Do I want old people killed? No, but I do wish that they could legally chose it for themselves. I lost my father last year (which is why I got out of the Army) to Altzheimer's disease. His mother died from it too. My maternal grandmother is now suffering from it as well. Having been through it, I have to say that I never want to become a burden on my family like that. My father had a living will, and ended up pulling out his feeding tube. He was only 65. Because he was cared for at home, a police detective was sent to question my mother. Can you imagine her pain having be questioned? And this is America, the greatest nation on earth. I can say what ever I like, even if I don't believe it, and it will be sure to piss somebody off. About your SS benifits, you do realize that after all these baby boomers retire in the next few years, there won't be any money left at all? I will never see SS benifits, so I save and invest. And the Republicans are talking about cutting taxes, to get elected. Ordinarily I'd be all for this, but....this will slow down the economy. By cutting taxes, inflation will rise. Greenspan will have to raise the interest rate (again), and thus investment spending will go down. I can understand how the Republicans are afraid that if they have a budget surplus, the Democrats will just end up spending it frivosouly, but doesn't it make more sense to instead pay off more of the principle on the national debt? This would be much better for the economy as a whole, and keep the investment spending up. Oh-well, more fruitless rambling that will undoubtably get someone else jumping down my throat. As for myself growing old. Well, right now I motorcycle ride, windsurf, surf, water and snow ski, skydive, scuba dive, hunt fish, yada yada yada. Once I am no longer able to do these things, then I will get on my boat and sail away, doing something else that I love. Read "Sailing Alone Around the World", and you see what I want to do. After his first successful solo circumnavigation, Captain Joshua Slocoumb sailed off to explore the Orinoco, and was never seen again. It isn't a tragedy to die doing something that you love. You either speed up then and get in front, slow down and let them merge in, or move over a lane. I rode like this everyday between Seattle and Tacome, on the stretches where there wasn't an HOV lane, and I found that I never had a problem. Actually, most people seem to avoid the right lane, so I found myself alone in it quite often, even when the traffic was pretty heavy. Now, if we were talking about a local highway that doesn't have limited access, then you bet I'd stay in the left lane, and through the intersections I'd try to keep a car next to me on the right. This reminds me of last Thursday. I had a lady almost pull out of a stop sign and kill me. I was turning left, and had no stop. She was on the road that I was turning on and wasn't really slowing for her stop and starting her left turn. I was looking right at her and realized that she didn't see me, so I beeped the horn. She stood on her brakes, a good five feet past the stop sign. She then proceeded to yell at me about cutting the corner. If I had, I'd be lunchmeat. I guess right of way isn't in her vocabulary. Oh-well. I once read that everybody should drive around like they were an Aztec sacrifice strapped to their front grill. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world then?
