Right now I'm debating between getting about 300 different things, one is an off-road helmet, as it gets way too hot and dusty off-road in GA. I would like to get a helmet with a nice interior, as I have noticed many MX helmets are basically styrofoam covered with nylon, no padding. I'm also looking for the best anti-sweat goggles out there. I don't care about cold-weather performance, only comfort, noise, and ventilation. I'm leaning towards an Arai VX, and Scott Bevo Sweat goggles. Unfortunately, no local dealer has the Arai helmets, so I am assuming they have a comfy interior. Our theory is it is related to the balancer mechanism. I remember reading that there was an update or recall on the balancers on some models. Can anyone enlighten me on what was the problem/solution and what years were affected? thanks, wildBill 92 klr Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 18:03:19 -0700 From: Bart Cox Subject: (klr650) After following along here..... I BOUGHT A KLR650 YESTERDAY!! After a lot of online research and sitting on various bikes, I finally made the decision to buy a KLR. I did look into the Transalp, but didn't want the extra weight, and prefer a taller bike (I'm 6'5"). Down to what I bought: I bought a '93 with 17k on it. This was a lot older with a LOT more miles than I wanted, BUT the price was GREAT, and I had a mechanic friend of mine look it over. It needs some work, but since I was looking to spend $1k to 1.5k MORE, I figured I could use the savings to make the changes I wanted to better suit me. Of course, I'm looking for any comments and suggestions on what I am doing with the bike. Since its license was non-op, I can't ride it, and want to wait for my safety class before I get on the thing in traffic, I took it to a highly recommended bike shop. The shop said on a number of things: "You could get some more miles off of this part or that to save money" but I wanted to KNOW that it is going to be sound for some time to come. I am having them: Replace chain and sprockets (I wanted the 16t front sprocket but they didn't have any) Put on fresh tires (the bike sat for a while). I went with the Dunlop Trailmax. I know that they seem to be eaten away pretty fast, but they are supposed to be very sticky and smooth on the road. Though they are more expensive and run down faster, I would rather loose expensive rubber than my own skin, due to a spill on other tires. PLUS, if they need to be replaced sooner, I can always switch to something else if I'm not happy with Trailmax. Exhaust. It has some leaks in it, so they are taking it apart to see where the problem is and make needed replacements. After talking with friends and family who have ridden for decades, I decided that stock will be easier and more reliable to deal with, even if there may be less performance. Progressive fork springs. I'm tall and plan to take a passenger from time to time, so I've only heard good things about this set-up. Filter. K&N...... nothing more needs to be said here. Carb rebuild. Again, I'm sticking with stock and making it perform. If I have problems, it's easy to get parts and fix. Repair dent in front rim. If it cannot be fixed, I will replace both front and back with gold color rims.......what the heck!? A little extra money for vanity..... I'm not working on a BMW or Harley. Oil and filter change and coolant change. I could do that myself, may as well let them take a look..... just in case something is going on that I wouldn't notice. I'm going to wait on other changes and gear until I've ridden it for a while and see what changes I want to make. However, I am researching and likely going to buy and do: A Tim Bernard side racks for the saddle bags I've been given, or the MAC-D one piece rack. I am hoping one of them will also work with the Ventura sissy-bar system. I've emailed all of them and am waiting to see. PAINT THE BIKE! It may be heresy to say it here, but that color scheme is DREADFUL! POWDER BLUE on a motorcycle?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I want to go with an all-black paint job. I have never done this and am wondering if it is possible to get a paint job that will last on all those plastic body parts. Gel-grips Re-do or buy a new seat. Like I said before, the powder blue has GOT to go! I'll wait to see how comfortable the stock seat is, and if it's good, I'll have it recovered, with maybe a little modification if needed. Braided front brake lines and bigger or different pads. I wanted them to do this when I brought the bike in, but they told me to ride it for a while and see how I like it and THEN decide if I want to change it. Sounds like a good suggestion to me! Who would have thought that a bike shop would be honest enough to turn down extra work!? Extra lighting up front. From having lived in the country, I appreciate being able to see distances in the dark. I'm still looking into the best way to go with this one. Maybe a throttle lock...... BUT MOST IMPORTANT: (Actually a couple months ago) I signed-up for a biker safety program. That starts this next week and runs for a couple evenings and weekend days for a couple weeks. Thanks for letting me drone-on here! I am looking forward to following along the further discussions about this bike and its many uses! Just put a set of the gels on my KLR and the ends had to be cut off, not just a hole in the end. In my opinion, there are too many great grips out there on the market and the stock ones are just too crappy to worry about, chuck them after cutting them up! - -neil Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 22:24:30 EDT From: Carmic7@aol.com Subject: Re: (klr650) supertrapp How did this happen? were the screws in? did they shear? - -neil Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 19:30:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Alex Jomarron Subject: (klr650) back to normal Life is slowly returning. The first day the bike was very hesistant when revving up. I opened up the airbox cover and just screwed it shut again and the revs smoothed out again. I wonder if the altitude (4300 ft) is really a problem since the bike runs fine now without any adjustments. Is there another way to check? The spark plug maybe? On another note, the new xenon headlight bulb with stock power rating that Fred gave me before I left ($19.50)work a lot better than the original, brighter with greater throw and a bluish white light. At rear, I run the halogen taillight and the Lifebrite LED rear lights in a triangular configuration. I hope this will keep the truckers here from running over me!!
