For me there's no comparison, the Tiger is far and away the better bike for me. Of course the KLR is better suited to dirt roads, so if that's what you're after it might be the way to go. But for the open road, the Tiger devours the KLR. For me there is no comparison though. The KLR is a typical Kawasaki machine. Cheaply built, nothing special. - --------------------------- ONElist Sponsor ---------------------------- ONElist: your connection to like-minds and kindred spirits. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - --WebTV-Mail-27533-12299-- Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 23:07:49 -0400 (EDT) From: miketortuga@webtv.net (Michael Stecyk) Subject: (klr650) Fwd: [triumphtiger] KLR vs Tiger - --WebTV-Mail-22087-12309 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit - --WebTV-Mail-22087-12309 Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Message/RFC822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Received: from mailsorter-102-3.iap.bryant.webtv.net (209.240.198.121) by postoffice-242.iap.bryant.webtv.net with WTV-SMTP; Tue, 10 Aug 1999 17:16:06 -0700 (PDT) Return-Path: Received: from onelist.com (www.onelist.com [209.207.164.231]) by mailsorter-102-3.iap.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.8/ms.graham.14Aug97) with SMTP id RAA07303 for ; Tue, 10 Aug 1999 17:16:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: (qmail 2175 invoked by alias); 11 Aug 1999 00:09:12 -0000 Received: (qmail 2152 invoked by uid 99); 11 Aug 1999 00:09:07 -0000 Date: 11 Aug 1999 00:09:07 -0000 Message-ID: <934330147.2147@onelist.com> To: triumphtiger@onelist.com Received: from 209.181.90.103 by www.onelist.com with HTTP; 11 Aug 1999 00:09:07 -0000 From: e7018@olsenantiques.com Mailing-List: list triumphtiger@onelist.com; contact triumphtiger-owner@onelist.com Delivered-To: mailing list triumphtiger@onelist.com Precedence: bulk List-Unsubscribe: Reply-to: triumphtiger@onelist.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: [triumphtiger] KLR vs Tiger From: e7018@olsenantiques.com some thoughts Just traded in my 94 KLR on the 99 black cat. KLR was a great bike for around town and day tripping. My cruise to the north end of 101 and then down the length of vancouver island last summer showed me I needed more power. With my gear in a climbing pack, I just didnt have enough poop to attack some of the twisties like I wanted to. On the logging roads I hit, the KLR had all the power I wanted. I think that it depends on the kind of riding that is planned. Single rider, overnighters are great on the KLR. The tiger is the only way to go for longer or two up trips. I would have kept my KLR but for lack of storage room and I have my old faithfull 600xl for local logging road blasting. 64 BSA 441 victor (BARRRT) 75 TL250/298 kitted 77CB750f 84 XL600 99 black Tiger here is another torch trick..... heat whatever up to bright red with a slightly carborizing flame... turn OFF the oxygen and heavily coat the hot steel with soot (carbon)...when cool, wire brush clean. This is simple case hardening. The hot steel sucks up carbon , giving a harder surface. Repeat for deeper hardening. This works great on bolts. Use grade 8 for the strength and case harden for surface hardness. OLY PS Any Tiger riders in Tacoma/Seattle area??? Wanna go weekend tripping??? They work real good with my enclosed helmet but they would only work up to about 30 or 40 mph with dirt helmets. There are very few components but they have to be matched up properly. the radios are about $95 and the wiring (I make them from radio shack parts) is another 6 or $7. They are good for 75mph with full face helmets. The radios are great!! As for the stainless lines. I heard from a Galfe rep that it is almost impossible to get a stainless brake line to pass DOT regulations. Something about they are not flexible enough and only last about 20 years safely. Geez. Had my buds 90 tegai (13k) apart today looking for a mystery noise and found that the spring was at the end of its tensioning ability. Chain did not measure out of spec and there was still plenty of tensioning travel in the concentric adjuster. We cut the spring shorter bent a new hook on the end and reinstalled it. Is it possible that the update included a shorter spring? We cut 2-3 coils out depending on what side your looking at and it seemed about right. Also does anyone know of a good mailorder discount oem kawi source? Our local dealer has bent rims. How about online microfiche? Get all my skidoo/rotax stuff off online fiche and its the way to go. Best done with a low-restiction, straight-through style muffler, of the type hoonboys frequently put on their sportsbikes. You have to keep peak pressures in the muffler in mind. There's not much point splitting your muffler just to piss off a cage driver. But be warned, they are slicker than snot on pavement. The street traction on hard core knobbies is very limited, and I've almost had a serious accident because of them, that would have been totally my fault. I had a car stop unexpectedly in front, and when I grabbed a handfull of brakes, I slid. I somehow managed to countersteer into somebody's front yard on the right, nearly killing a yard gnome and tearing up his lawn. BE CAREFUL! Personally, I would get you a decent set of 50/50 or 60/40 street/dirt tires, and save the knobbies for serious off-roading.
