Has anyone tried these tires? Did you like them? How are they wearing? The usual questions. I'm in search of some bad assed dirt tires that are DOT legal. Yeah, I know, MT21 and K139, but I like alternatives. I'm particually interested in the new Dunlop D606 for the rear, as I have never been fond of Pirellis. Here's a link to the Metzler tire: http://pecosbill.com/cgi-local/shop.pl/SID=32771166047/page=medp. htm This is on the Pecos Bills site, a dealer, not the manufacturer, sorry. Here's a link for the dunlop tire: http://www.dunloptire.com/cycle/tires/d606.html I've also been pondering the merits of going with a fatter front tire. I hit a lot of sand and silt in my desert riding, so a fatter tire would be a benifit, I think. But so far, the only fat front tire I've found has been the Kenda 270 in a 3.25x21, and this tread is almost identical to the IRC GP-1, which I am already running in 3.00x21. I was hoping for a little more bite, but this might not be a bad compromise for street riding, here is what I'm thinking: the Kenda 270 3.25x21 in the front, and either the MT21, Dunlop D606 (which I'm inclined to try over the MT21), or this Metzler MCE Karoo on the back. I was thinking that the added width on the front in the sand might help with that that tread design, and the rear having as much knobs as the law will allow might be pretty good in the sand. On the street, the Kenda should perform just like my IRC, which I'm used to. I'm thinking that it will handle braking and cornering better than a front MT21 or Dunlop K139. Can anyone see this? Or should I just stop thinking so hard and go for the K139? To tell you the truth, in hard dirt, gravel and rocks I'm pretty happy with the GP-1's. But as soon as that stuff loosens and I hit sand, those tires leave a lot to be desired. The rear GP-1's sand traction particularily sucks. Thoughts anyone? Discuss...... Gary, My brand new KLR650 A13 at 2100 miles exhibited a lost of power on hills and passing at freeway speeds. I too had to down shift a lot to find that needed punch for passing. I had just come off of a camping trip where I ran 30 miles of dry dusty New Mexico desert mountain roads. My stock air cleaner was caked with dirt (turned to mud) on the stock coat of air cleaner oil Kawa puts on their air cleaners. I ordered a K&N air filter from Fred and also installed 6 of the 1" pop-in filter ports (minus the foam rubber that was in them). These are the ones that you have to drill out 1" holes in your air box to install. Anyway, I did not do the Stage II jet kit because I live at +5000' elevation and I need more air up here, not fuel. Just adding the K&N brought my KLR back to original feel plus a little. Adding the 6 - 1" ports gave it a throatier sound. To me, this was obvious. But, I'll beat your mechanics checked inside the air box for mud, uh? - -- Jeff, NM, A13 http://www.flash.net/~n5ujj/hamstuff - HAM It UP Page http://www.biker.net/klark/ - My KLR Page Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ End of klr650-digest V2 #719 ****************************
