Chain Tension repair PART I I am attempting to repair the balance chain tension adjustment mechanism because my adjusting bolt was found to be unable to be tightened. Here is where I am: I have removed the left side cover of the engine (magneto cover). I have removed the cover from the front sprocket. No problems. I kept the side cover electrics connected and simply laid it off to the side on the footpeg. The side cover feels funny as you pull it off becasue of the magnetics working against you. I then had the chance to examine the visible part of the balancer chain tension adjustment. It is difficult to see all of it becasue the starter clutch gear and rotor are still intact. What is can see is that the adjusting bolt seems to be broken on the other side of the balance chain tensioner adjusting lever. I still can spin the adjusting bolt, but I cannot get it out. What I can see of the adjusting lever seems to be bent and shiney. It will be necessary to remove the rotor and the starter clutch gear. `This should give me full access to the problem. To accompllish this, I will need the rotor holder ((Kaw 57001-1234) and the rotor puller (Kaw 57001-1216). I would not expect a dealer to loan or rent me the tools, so I figure unless somebody volunteers to loan them to me, I will be purchasing the tools. I also may need to e-z out a broken off bolt and possibly put in a helicoil. I plan to report my progress, or perhaps lack of same, to this list. I expect progress will be slow. The tools will need to be ordered, so that is a 2 week wait. Then I shall need to order parts, another 2 weeks. I did not want to order tools or parts until I had the cover off. I still don't want to order parts until I see the rest of the components. I had gotten seperated from the rest of the Cal Posse passing thru Green River, UT enroute to Moab. It was a wicked afternoon dust/rain/ thunderstorm. Anyway, I had made it to Moab intact and was trying to figure out where the Redstone and the free pizza was. Still disoriented, I stopped to fill up the gas tank when you know who, rides up on a "totally stock" DR350 and welcomes me to town and answers some of my questions (namely where the pizza was). The rally was primo. To all who made it possible, I salute you. Darrel, A12 (not stock) L.A. I used it when I changed the tires on the bike and it helped out allot. I recently inherited a 85 Suzuki SP600F (with the manual and service manual) that has 4K on it and is showroom condition. It also has a new Chain and Metzler tires, and a small slip streames handlebar mounted fairing (it is very easy to take on and off and seams to be more durable and offers better protection than the aftermaket KLR fairing that I have seen.) I have put about 1700 fun filled miles on the bike and can get about 280 miles out of its 5.5 gallon tank. Besides the obvious difference of it being air cooled and 40lbs. lighter, all of the other specs are nearly the same as the KLR 650.(yes it is a bit slower off the line but still tops out at 115mph) I am planning on taking a trip to Alaska (9k) and who knows were else I might go on the bike. Suzuki only made this bike one year in the states,(in Europe it was the DR600 and was made for 5 years) then in 1990 it got some minor upgrades and 50cc more and became the DR650. Before I received this bike I was seriously thinking about getting a KLR 650. It has been built for forever and has a huge selection of aftermarket parts available (including some awesome hard luggage) and a very cool e-mail list. None of which the SP has(I have been looking for a center stand for some time), I haven't even been able to find a e-mail list on DRs.(if anyone knows of one please let me know) So what do you think? Should I sell the bike and get a KLR? (if so how much do you think I could get out of it) Or keep it and replace the fork springs, rear shock and go to stainless brake line. The only money that I have in the bike right now are the tires and the fairing. Any comments one way or the other would be greatly appreciated.
