As I recall, the consensus was that SJ oils are just fine for the KLR. That's a good thing, since my local auto parts store didn't have anything EXCEPT SJ oils. Even good old Quaker State Super Blend is SJ rated. (I suppose you can go to a bike shop and pay $10/qt for SF rated oil, though.) As a side note, I switched over to a full synthetic SJ oil a month or so ago. I've noticed the clutch is a little more "grabby" during takeoffs from stop lights, but I can live with that. That's more an effect of synthetic rather than the SJ rating. BTW, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, and in the process, break something... _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Lamar, I think it's a good question, but one that the list has OD'd on in the past. I searched the archives, for "SJ" and found mucho beaucoups postings on this subject, as there has been considerable learned debate regarding the virtues of various ratings of oils. I just skimmed the search results, but it may be worth a closer read if you want to know more about the wild and woolly world of lubrication, especially zinc additive levels. I interpret the bottom line to be that a good quality SJ oil will be fine. The type of oil being less important than regular oil changes. Me, I would go ahead and use it, and if you have any qualms, simply replace it in a thousand miles with the superest duperest oil of your wet dreams... The plastic gear (inexpensive) did just what it was designed to do; it ate itself up rather than snap the speedometer cable (expensive) or rather than eat up the metal gear (expensive) when the speedometer cable became stiff from lack of cleaning and lubricating. Cheapest solution: Clean and lubricate your speedo cable as per the service manual. Don't forget to buy the proper amount of beer for this servicing. This will lock the steering to full left. If you are still scared of losing Princess K, you can lock her any additional way that you feel is appropriate. The steering being locked should remind YOU that YOU placed an additional lock on the bike; if not... In fact, the KLR is a great low profile camping vehicle. I took it places where only hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders would be able to get to. If you can't find somewhere nice and secluded to camp out in the mountains or desert on a KLR, you're not trying very hard. I just tried to leave wherever I stayed just like I found it, and if there was any pre-existing trash, I tried to take some out with me too. I usually would not look for a place to camp until my shadow got quite long. North of the Arctic Circle, this was not until after midnight, making for a long riding day. Much of my best dirt riding was while branching off the main roads onto successively punier trails until I could find "the spot". You know it when you find it, and develop a knack for knowing where you'll be comfortable for the night. My main tip, which I must repeat to myself constantly like a mantra is: "when in doubt leave it out, when in doubt leave it out, when in doubt leave it out...". For me, nothing bogs down a good scooter camping trip like too much junk! Stuff just tends to accrete, and everything you bring must be constantly dealt with, every day. Lean and mean is my scene... (well, compared to a motorhome...) I took my cheap old K-Mart Sleeping bag, my new $29 Wal-Mart tent (worked really well). My one indispensable luxury was one of those wonderful Therma-Rest mattresses -- If you don't already have one of these jokers, get one, or an equivalent -- I'm real partial to taking the cheapest stuff that will do the job, because it is so vulnerable on the back of the scoot, and I don't want to worry too much about losing it. Another luxury I took was one of those $40 "Safe-Water" 1 liter filter/purifier bottles. Once beyond Texas, in country where there are clear streams and lakes, this paid for itself by allowing me to forgo the $1.50 bottled water by just using what I found along the way for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. They say it is good for 200 gallons per filter, and removes Giardia, E-Coli, etc. It also gave me peace of mind in the event that I got stuck somewhere way out in the Nauga, that I would be able to live off the land a little better, without fear of contaminated water. It turns out I took too many clothes, they occupied my entire left pannier, the big one. I must work on this in future trips. And then, of course, there is the "anti-bear-trouble" wisdom, which everyone will tell you: - keep a clean campsite, leave no food smells around your tent. - put any food/cooking stuff up in a distant tree. - brush your teeth and generally try not to smell too delicious before going to sleep. I had no trouble with bears, and only saw one black bear the whole time, in B.C. 8^( Cheers, Tom Meagher Houston TX A13 "Warthog" - -----Original Message----- From: MoTec To: Tom Meagher Date: Sunday, August 22, 1999 7:44 PM Subject: Re: (klr650) back fwum twip >Can you share with me some tips on camping on the way to Alaska? Does the "IDS quiet 2 exhaust" overcome the longevity problem to which Gino refers to in his review, where the packing was shot at 400 miles? About 2 years ago, I switched our vehicles to synthetic oil, Mobile 1 to be exact. 10w30 in a Chevy 350 that had about 60,000 miles and 10w30 in a Mazda 3.0 Liter V6. Both vehicles take 5 qts. I noticed both vehicles used about 1/2 qt within 3000 miles. By accident, when changing the oil on the Chevy, I didn't have any Mobil 1, so I substituted Castrol GTX 10w30. Guess what, after 3K miles, the Chevy didn't use a drop of oil and the Mazda continued to burn 1/2 qt every 3K miles. So, the next Mazda oil change got Castrol GTX 10w30 and at 3K miles, no oil usage. I then put Mobil 1 back into both engines for a double check and they both used 1/2 qt at 3K miles. I again switched to Catstrol and this weekend I changed oil in both engines. No oil usage in 3K miles with the conventional stuff. Is it normal for synthetic oil to be burned off/leaked out with normal usage?
