Ok, so today I stop by the law school here in Miami (U. Miami) to do some reasearch for an upcoming interview with a firm and what do I see ? A brand new Y2K KLR 650 with the funky new green outfit ! Congrats to you, new owner ! So, new KLR rider ! Are you lurking on the list ? If you are, drop me a note and perhaps we can get together for some rides. Heck, maybe we can even round up a little 'FLA Possee'....'course the only problem here is there really aren't many places to go riding.... Once the rains let up....for you northerners.....we're feeling a bit damp down here.....I want to go exploring around Big Cypress National Preserve. I am told there are a bunch of fire roads up there. That new KLR really needs to be ridden though.....only 61 miles on the odo as of today.... Your local dirt bike shop probably has something that looks like a milk crate but it is much stronger and is designed to support the weight of the bike. NKLR I always though that was caused by the motor not being run hard enough (one reason I eschew gearing up for long touring runs) or being run in short bursts and therefore not getting hot enough. Was your plug OIL fouled? I would think that misinstalled rings would exhibit more symptoms than burning =BD qt in 3,000 miles.Bogdan I wish! We were originally talking about Gino's car. My bike consumes around 500 cc of oil every 200 miles! The plug wasn't oil fouled, but carbon fouled. Like I say, it doesn't blow smoke when it runs, not that I can see anyway. I can smell it in the exhaust though. When I pulled the plug, it was crusted with carbon and dry. I'm shuttering to think about what the inside of the combustion chamber looks like. I tried running some Techron, but I can't tell that it made any difference. I do notice that the motor burns more oil when it is flogged and under more load at higher revs, like going down the highway at 80 mph, or trying to plow it around in the sand over the dunes. Around town it doesn't burn as much. Hey Fred: I'm making a list and checking it twice! I'll be calling soon! As for not getting hot enough, well I warm up every thing I ride or drive before I pull out of the driveway, or away from the dock, even in the summer. But it would seem to me that the oil not being warm would have a higher viscosity, and therefore wouldn't be as likely to slip past the rings, so less oil would be used in this case. If the motor is constantly being run for short periods and not warmed up, it will wear the rings prematurely from lack of lubrication, which might in turn cause oil consumption. But that is just a theory I just now pulled out of my butt. Other theories? Any input would be appreciated. > I have had my bike propped completely off the ground from both wheels with a milk crate. Make sure its a quality crate that has the steel band reinforcing the top. Also, I use a section of 2x6 in between the bike and the crate, as it allows less deformation of the top of the crate, and steadies the bike more, and props it up enough to get both wheels off the ground. I have also combined this with the "economy bike stands" under the swingarm for even more stability. Once you loosen all the clamp bolts on the triple clamp on the steering head, you should find that the fork tubes slide easily enough. A little twisting action helps too. Are you sure that you have the stock seat, and not the Corbin aftermarket seat with the dip? Put the sidestand down, maybe with a small 2x4 block under it. Stand to the left side of the bike facing it and pull the bike towards you and up on the sidestand. The rear wheel and bike frame will lift up in the air, balanced on the sidestand and the front tire. Lean the bike up against yourself, then reach over the bike's seat and pull the crate under the bike. Then slowly lean the bike back to the right and over on top of the crate. Its extremely easy and doesn't require any strength at all, just a bit of care. I read this online somewhere, lets see.... http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcdirt/trailrider/lift.html with pictures too! I have restrained myself recently about all of this run the other guy's motorcycle down business, what with the stress of the new job, the move, the pathetically small penis, and the nerve-wracking task of how to appear that your Honda can keep up with Harleys, but enough is enough. My bike has never done anything to yours. Not to inspire this kind of hostility. All it has ever done is look down its snout at the little guy, and feel nothing but sympathy and empathy. It looks at other motorcycles and sees saving graces. Sometimes comfort, sometimes an impressive top speed, sometimes all-around usefulness. But all it can think of when it sees VFRs, is how low the motorcycle can sink, when it is forced to strain not only under its own weight, but with the weight of all the overfed, overeducated, and underinformed fucking yuppie wanna-bes and their notebook computers that buy them. The digital display dashboard is Honda's attempt to make the truly fucking geekified, pentium loving megahertz bragging Erkels feel at home. Which, of course, is the only place they ever fucking are. And as for the cheesy, puny so-called bodywork that I assume is held in place with Crazy Glue (developed by Honda), it is obvious that the designer for the Helix Honda motorscooter just went way too far this time. Now we come to the engine. Finally admitting their mistake, Honda is, of course, giving up on the fucking V4 engine, even for their race bikes. No amount of money, engineering, or development can keep them competitive in their Vespa class. Turning instead for their true inspiration, Honda has acknowledged the wisdom of Harley-Davidson, and is attempting to develop a V-twin racebike. Well, good luck. I truly wish them the best. It will be the endcap on a terrible section of the motorcycling timeline, where Honda's addictive mind-numbing chemical installed in handgrips, absorbed through the skin, making writers and reviewers think Hondas are in any way, superior to any other brand of Japanese (or American, for that matter) motorcycle, has finally come to an end. What, however, will become of the owners of all of these rolling mistakes, abortions under the motorcycle development principle? We must face the fact that they, too, will become orphans, abandoned by the company that once conditioned them. I foresee a life of petulence, crime, and eventual cyclecide, where they hopefully will take their bikes out of the view of the general public. I wish you the best, my friend, struggling as you will to ride off into the sunset on a Honda. Please just try and keep it the fuck out of my way.
