To make a long story short, it's all back in one piece. I fired her up yesterday and up to 2k rpm it runs ok, after that it wants to die of richness. Actually it did die a couple of times. I couldn't even ride down the street since I've got no accelerator over 2k. Let me tell you what happened. I did read the instructions on dualsport.org but I never found the collar (next to the main jet holder) until the bike started running like crap (after reassembly) and a buddy of mine suggested that I'd missed the collar, So I traced back my steps and figured out where I had shot carb cleaner on the main and on the carb and found it outside my side garage door on the grass. Lucky dog ! Now what I don't know is where did the collar come from. If you have the carb on your work bench, upside down. With the float bowls exposed, would the collar go in the hole in the body of the carb followed by the main jet holder and the main jet ? Or would it go in thru the top of the carb ? Also, that silver color collar has a longer part and a shorter one, I believe the diameters are different, what part pointing where ? If one of you klr gurus can give me a phone # where I can ask you a question or two tonight while I'm in the process around 7/10 PM ET. I'll appreciate it. Depends on which year KLR I think about 96 they changed the way the sprocket is held on. pre 96 ? had two 8mm bolts and a small keeper and the very end of the countershaft was a half a spline off from the main shaft and the keeper slipped on and turned and then the bolts were threaded into the sprocket. after 96? there is a 27mm nut that is very tight with a splined washer that has the edges bent over against the nut to act as a keeper the nut is right hand threaded but is very tight. good luck Scottt Wass Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 14:31:02 GMT From: "Di or Eddie C" Subject: Re: (klr650) KLR650 clutch! help! I would definitely say that my slipping clutch problem was the springs and not the plates. It had about 28,000 km or 17,500 miles on it. For the bother I replaced the plates at the same time. But I couldn't tell the difference between the new and the old visually - would've had to have mic'd them, and - like you - I had to use one of the original plates. The service manager basically told me that they wanted to avoid replacing the entire transmission, so they ordered "a bunch of replacement springs that are part of the transmission" to try first. It appears to have fixed the problem. I should have asked for elaboration, but I was already in a big hurry to return to work. Not that I would have understood a more detailed explanation, as I'm pretty mechanically inept. That collar is treacherous! Once a month someone writes to me about it. Looking at the carb upside down, the narrow end of the collar goes in first and protrudes into the venturi. The thicker end and lip prevent it from being sucked into your venturi or engine. Now thread the holder and main jet and you're set. I wouldn't remove the holder unless the carb is off the bike and in an area where you can see the collar fall out. If it doesn't fall out on it's own, push it down from the venturi. A blast of carb cleaner sent mine on it's way. Luckily it was in a clean room at the time. Sometimes it falls out on it's own. Here's a photo showing the sequence. http://members.aol.com/roundr1/carb/cvkbleed.jpg Redondo Ron A10 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 09:45:53 -0600 From: Jeff Subject: (klr650) Deteriorating Corbin saddle >Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 20:02:58 -0400 >From: "Tom Simpson" >Subject: Re: (klr650) Corbin lives up to reputation > >- -Tom >'96 KLR 650 >with rapidly deteriorating Corbin saddle.
