I was going to go back to my favorite Pirelli MT-60s, until I just happened to talk to Mike Walburn at Dual Star. He's just come into a lot of stock Dunlop K750s that were removed from Y2K KLRs by Kawasaki before the bikes ever hit the street. I just picked up a pair. They aren't strictly new tires, but you couldn't tell it by looking at them. I actually like the stock tires for the kind of riding I do: mostly commuting (including a mile of sometimes-streambed at the beginning and end of every day), and occasional fire roads. So if anyone is looking for a deal on like-new stockers, give Dual Star a call. The usual disclaimer applies. Just got back from visiting my friend in the hospital. Last week, on his way to work, he had an accident. Busted collarbone, 4 busted ribs, busted ankle, many bruises. Multiple MRI's and CAT scans indicate only minor, minimal internal injuries. Safety gear??? Hein Garicke riding jacket with liner, full face HJC, heavy denim pants, Kevlar gloves, steel tipped construction boots. Vehicle? 1999 Kawy ZRX1100. Skilled? I think so, He takes the experienced rider course every spring, and has quite a number of years riding. He's my favorite guy to ride with. What happened? He hit an "alligator" on I-84 near the PA/NY border. That's what we call the tread portion of a recap tire that cuts loose, usually they explode. Apparently one cut loose within minutes of my friend while on his way to work at 3am. He hit it head on at 65 mph and was thrown, landed on his shoulder and then proceeded to slide 150ft. off the roadway. 2 truck drivers came to his aid and he was airlifted to WCMC, the regional trauma center. He was congratulated by EMT and ER staff on his safety gear, as that same night another rider was in with multiple internal injuries, and we have yet to find out if he made it. He was wearing an "beanie and T-shirt" during his "slow-speed" accident, according to my friends doctor. My point? Aside from wearing proper safety gear, watch out for those EFFING alligators. This is the third alligator mishap I've heard since mid-August. My friend now has much pain, and many weeks of therapy, I thank God he's alive and able to fully recover. Ride AWARE as well as safe. NY Pete Ps, While the bike has yet to be evaluated by insurance, it apparently was towed as "rideable", but I haven't seen it yet. The bike can be repaired or replaced, my friend can't. Is this for off road clearance issues or is it a problem all round ? Have you guys been chewing up license plates ? Both. First off-road excursion with full luggage on a reasonably road-like dirt road in Baja, broke the frame off the license plate and bent it a little. Then with partial luggage on pure highway stuff with a little bit of maneuvering due to crazy suv drivers on cell phones the tire caught the plate - skidded off a couple of the letter bottoms and completely bent the plate up and under the rear fender. For my most recent trip to the Man, I bent the scuffed plate up and away from the wheel and there was no contact, but I'm wondering how much of this the plate can take before it comes loose and I have to pay for another... For those wondering about the trip to the Man, yes, I will post a description of the trip, but it really wasn't all that exciting. All tarmac. Just trying to get caught up at work so I can get out early enough to pick up my conure from the place that boarded her while I was away. > > Tire perhaps rubs on the plate ? - -- Sarah Barwig Developer WeddingChannel.com (213) 599-4144 888 S. I'm not a very intense off-road rider but I was just going up a 4WD road in like 2nd gear and after a medium sized bump the back tire caught the license plate, ripped apart the molded plastic it was attached to, and shot it all toward the front inside of the wheel well. The plate got stuck between the tire, the bike frame, and the chain of all things and scared the crap out of me. I stopped and pulled the plate out to find that it was the shape of a taco shell. Luckily no damage to the bike but I immediately went home, moved the plate up, and haven't had problems since. I'd suggest moving it (it's very easy to do) just for the peace of mind alone... - -Vic A12 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 17:43:14 -0700 From: "Vik Banerjee" Subject: Re: (klr650) License plate issues My plate was crushed, chewed and spit out in Moab....luckily someone found it and saved me the ride back to Canada (2 days) plateless. Like it or not, Americans just don't trust large institutions, and we're probably correct in that regard. The fact that nuclear power plants gain efficiency as they get larger means that we get a small number of 500MW -- 1GW nuclear plants clustered into huge power centers. This clustering leads to large potential outages if one of the plants go down. The way we are heading is to build a very large number of natural gas (yea!) fired generators, mostly the new, efficient turbines. This gives great flexibility with minimal pollution, and no (political, not technical) waste disposal program. T.S.
