As to the coal argument, you'll find that new coal plants are almost > as rare as new nukes. The new plants are largely being built for natural gas > and many of those are turbines, which offer clean burning, nearly instant > startup and low build costs. A. What about all of the coal plants that are already online, and will continue to be for the next 50 years? They are still contributing to the polution and health problems, and coal for them is still being mined. B. Natural gas turbines are ineffecient, cause enviornmental damage due to high emmisions of greenhouse gasses and thermal polution, and again, their fuel must be mined and drilled for. The safety record associated for the transport of natural gas is pretty poor when compared to the safety level of the nuclear industry, based on an energy output per unit basis. Natural gas lines explode all the time in cities, and that gas is mostly used for heating and cooking. The volume of transport needed for electricity generation is far greater. As for being clean burning and cheap to build, I refer you to my argument about greenhouse gas production, and the increase in acid rain due to the formation of carbonic acids from incomplete combustion of natural gas. No matter how clean you try to make it burn, it will always form CO and CH2O gas molecules during combustion, and this is assuming a pure supply of methane. There are other hydrocarbon gasses present in natural gas, including sulfur compounds and other impurities. This represents in itself a huge hidden cost in the form of environmental and atmospheric damage, as well as the increased accululation of greenhouse gasses. > In the future, nukes probably will stage a comeback, as we decide that the > pollution that results from nuclear technology is less troublesome than the > pollution resulting from fossil fuels. This will give us an average density of the horse. If the density is less than the density of water, then it will float. I was in the Canadian Army...lol...we are still celebrating the war of 1812...=) Did you hear about the new smart small arms ammunition the Canadian Army has developed? Had the pipe laying on a concrete porch and started heating at the engine end of the pipe (also happened to be the upwind end). After about 2 minutes the pipe lit up in ramjet mode. I turned off the torch and watched the 8" exhaust flame comming out the back end for several minuted. The only down side was when the fuel ran out I was temporarly deafened by a minor explosion of gasses trapped by a reverse burn. Glad I had an observer as no one would ever believe me otherwise.
