After coming back from my trip this summer, the rear sprocket teeth looked real pointy after 12,000 miles. I would be afraid that flipping the rear sprocket, even with a new front sprocket and chain, would need very close regular inspections to verify mass and shape of the teeth, and bet the rear sprocket would need to be replaced before the new chain and front sprocket wore out. I'd rather change the whole set at one time, because IMO it doesn't pay to mess with drive mechanisms. OTOH, J.C. Ledbetter of New Orleans flipped his sprocket around on his trip to Inuvik and Prudhoe, and said it was fine. Thanks!!!! > > Gracias, amigos.... > > Saludos, > > Juan > > Here is Eldon Carl's advice taken from the January/February issue of DSN: "My routine for valve adjustment on a new KLR engine is as follows. Keep in mind that the stock settings are .004" to .008" for intake and .006" to .010" exhaust. I check the valves at 500, 1500, 3000 miles. I keep them on the loose side, i.e. .006" to .008" intake and .008" to .010" exhaust. At 6000 miles, I do another check and if they haven't moved, I set them at .005" to .007" intake and .008" to .010" exhaust. From 6000 miles on, I only adjust the valves every 10,000 miles. During my 123,000 miles of KLR riding. I've never found my valves out of spec using this method." With that in mind depending on you mileage and personal preference you could leave both intakes alone (No change) or increase the clearance to .007" on the RIGHT INTAKE with a 2.55 shim P/N 12037-012 To have .008 on the LEFT EXHAUST use 2.35 shim P/N 12037-008 To have .008 on the RIGHT EXHAUST use 2.45 shim P/N 12037-010 I doubt if you did any damage but it's good that you caught it now before it became any tighter. Hope this helps. - -- Walt - A14 "Stealth Machine" Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 08:41:56 -0700 From: Rodney Baker Subject: RE: FW: (klr650) NKLR: Dead Horse winds unlikely - ---------- From: Stephen Syrotiak Sent: September 18, 1999 4:42 AM To: Rodney Baker Cc: 'klr650@lists.xmission.com' Subject: Re: FW: (klr650) NKLR: Dead Horse winds unlikely The Horse Latitudes were so named for their extensive calms. It sounds like the weather might be better, plus it gives people that all-important time to prepare and accrue vacation. Creel looks to be a two day ride from San Antonio so that would be the perfect week-long getaway for me. The only thing that would make me change my mind is if the group got too big. Okay, call me quirky, but that's just the way I am. Don't let that be a factor in your plans though, because this sounds like a really cool idea. Make it fly, man! Hasta luego... Don't make the mistake of considering me a "Spanish speaker"- what I spew out is just a functional, Neanderthal-type version of it that enables me to find bathrooms, gas, and water (not necessarily in that order).
