I recommend the Pirelli MT60 if you can still find a rear in the proper size, otherwise try the MT80 (I had an MT80 on for only one season, but it seemed to be entirely equivalent to the MT60). Definitely steer clear of the Dunlop D604. Also, if you like the stock K750 (I do, even in the rain), call Dual Star--they should be able to get you a good deal on a set of K750s that were mounted and then unmounted, never ridden. After that 50 foot dismount I gave up > riding. But, alas, I am yearning for the open road, fire road etc. Glad that encounter left you intact, and welcome back! > Is the KLR good as daily transportation? Yes. I ride to work (~50 mile round trip, crosstown, mostly slab) daily on it, and use it as basic transportation as much as possible. I cannot fit all 4 of my kids on it, so Auxiliary Vehicle One comes into play sometimes. I have put about 4500 miles on this '96 bike since late June (it came with about 23K miles), including a couple of weeks when I could not ride due to injury, and including about 1250 miles one week driving through West Virginia. I always want to ride it more. The WV trip included a very marginal 'gravel' road: the McKendree Road. The only problem I had was worrying about my buddy on the Wide Glide Harley behind me. If he had a KLR also, we would have seen much less asphalt on that trip. > How does it handle in the dirt? From a very inexperienced dirt rider: It is too heavy, too easy to put down, too hard to pick up, and lots of fun. I lost it in the mud, and a couple of other times. It powered effortlessly up gravel-quarry hills that I thought were going to be a problem, and when I gave a little forethought to where the wheels were going to go, I was able to bomb around that quarry with considerable... adrenaline. > Rain? With Avon Gripsters, fine. I haven't had any 'encounters' in the rain (yet) and haven't pushed the point. > Street? Stable, fast and quick enough for me. Great in the mountainous twisties of West Virginia. The only comfort problem on the long stretches was my seat: there are two configurations of the Corbin seat and I have the wrong one. Look in the archives for discussions of after market seats. I wondered a bit whether thumper vibration would be a problem, but I don't find it annoying or tiring at all. > I have yet to actually ride one, but all my research says if your going to get a dual-purpose the KLR is the choice. My research pointed the same way, if street is your main venue. XL650R seemed to be the way to go if the orientation was more dirt. I bought my bike sight unseen from a guy 600 miles away, and have been very happy with it. > Does anyone have any gripes with the 2000? Contrary to what appears to be the popular sentiment, I think that gloss olive drab is a hideous idea, and that the Y2KLR is not lovely. MHO. > What are the best soft luggage accessories? There are a couple of racks designed for the KLR. Tim Bernard's racks have an excellent reputation and look very slick (I have only seen pictures, never in person). Several people on this list have commented very favorably about them. In my dealings with Tim he has been very helpful and businesslike. I got Arne Larsen's MAC-D rack (Production Serial #1), because I liked the one-piece wrap-around design. I've been quite happy with them and with his service. Strong, simple, unobtrusive, flawless fit. Useful for more than just protecting the sides and attaching bags to. I used a pair of Eclipse soft bags which I happened to have, and they were fine. > Any info provided is greatly appreciated. Lots of aftermarket choices. A few standard things that seem to be widely (but not universally) recommended: Progressive fork springs, stainless steel brake hose, center stand, Corbin seat (special flat version), Avon Gripsters, K&N air filter, freer-flow exhaust. Mine came with these, plus oversize front rotor, so I can't compare to stock configuration; never rode a stock KLR more than 10 minutes. There is much knowledge around this list about the details of these after-market options, as well as good luggage choices. Also, you get this incredible mailing list of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable non-flamers. Worth the price of the bike. > Thanks, RJ Yer welcim, hope this helps. -Spike Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Subscribe to Dual Sport News...write to Editor@dualsport.org for info. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 22:06:24 -0700 From: "Paul Christenson" Subject: Re: (klr650) mean ol' Mr. Gravity > In the interest of getting back to riding as quickly as possible, which bolts are a > mandatory minimum to loosen to get the front end to "relax" again, and in > what order should they be loosened and tightened? Been there, done that. In my case, I could hold the wheel between my legs and "grunt" the bars into the right direction without loosening anything. Short-term failures were due to loctite added during assembly. But Touratech stopped using loctite, and now the longer-term failures are arriving. We think gas fumes puffing out of vented gas caps is causing the embrittlement. If you don't see microcracks (they reflect in the light) you have nothing to worry about (unless the cracks do appear). If you do see microcracks, you'd be wise to use the 3mm safety screw into the back of the GPS (or some other safety measure) until we get the repair parts in. (I just loop the wrist strap around my mirror stalk). To get your repair parts please contact the retailer where you bought the mount. We will be providing them for our customers upon request at no charge. (But we don't have them yet.) Please mention if your address is different than your last order. Basically, I wanted to ask him if there's a higher screen for the Gran Canyon. He said no. He's had a few people asking about it but as far as he knew, there were no plans by Cagiva to make one. I haven't seen any aftermarket screens either. If this is the same Canyon we're talking about, then I really thought that it could do with a higher screen. At 900cc it ain't going to go on the dirt anyway. So it has to compete with the Tiger and Varadero. They've got better wind protection, IMHO. Also, those twin tanks might look trick, but I'm sure I'd get sick of filling in both at the same time every fuel stop. My 2p.
