I've found that the people that get the most angry about unleashed but well manored dogs are the people who don't even like dogs. My dog never gets any farther than shotgun range from me out on a walk, and on the street stays glued to my hip, walking right next to me. I put the leash on for appearance then, because I have seen cops hand out tickets before. But as soon as we hit the park, I drop the leash. My dog then picks up the leash in her mouth, and "walks" herself, still right at my side. Once I take the leash off, she goes into search mode, but always no further than 20-30 yards. I will be cruel and "torture" my dog on my birthday on Friday (The big 30), when Chucker and Hungarian Partrige season opens up. Then next week the real "torture" starts, with the opening of duck, geese and pheasant seasons. One of my friends who hasn't hunted with my dog asked if she was gun shy, and I just laughed silly. In the Army, I sometimes took here out in the field with me and used her as an informal scout dog when we would run a mini SERE school training helicoptor pilots. She'd have a blast, and when the real fireworks started, machine guns and artillery, she'd just sit by my side and watch the show. My dog started getting totally excited this weekend when she saw me take my shotguns out of the safe and clean them. Its really funny watching her during hunting season, she's never happier. Her appetite doubles from her extra excursions too, so I have to start feeding her twice a day this time of year. Best damn dog I've ever owned, and I've had such dogs as American Water Spaniels, Britany and Springer Spaniels, and have hunted with labs, pointers, weimers, vishlas, you name it. I am totally sold on the virtues of the Golden Retriever. I was really sad to learn that mine contracted Brucella, and thus couldn't have puppies and had to be spayed. But you better believe that I will get another one in the future. Besides being a great bird dog, she is the most loyal companion, the best dog I have EVER seen with kids (my daughter regularly tries to ride her like a horse, jumping on her back and grabbing her ears, the dog seems to love it, and tolerates all abuse little kids have given her), and a pretty good guard dog. She's not viscious, but she only barks when its important, and makes sure to alert me when things are wrong, like the time I chased a kid away who was trying to break into my neighbor's car. She has lived in everything from little apartments with no yard, to a big house with a huge yard. Where she lived didn't seem to matter to her, all that does seem to matter to her is being with the family. As I'm typing this right now she is lying down outside my study window trying to be close. So, if any of you were thinking about getting a new dog for your family or yourself, I would advise you to take a long hard look at Goldies. Sure, they can be expensive pups (~$500), but when cared for and loved they are priceless. My dog is going on seven years now, and still acts like a puppy. Two of my neighbors and a very close friend also have goldies. They are a very popular dog for a reason. The dealer cap is probably expensive, but the cap does a couple of neat things. It allows atmospheric pressure into the tank, without venting gasoline fumes, and to me, the locking mechanism is a plus. I have heard too many horror stories about gas getting stolen, sugar put in the gas tank, and even a case where an arsonist used a motorcycle's gas to not only torch the bike, but the residence of the bike's owner while he slept inside. I'll stick to stock for myself. What I used was a Radio Shack 30A relay , part # 275-226, use the original horn wiring to control the relay and run another FUSED line from the battery to the relay for the horns. You'll also need some spade lug connectors to fit the relay terminals and a good crimper to put them on. If you really want to do it right, crimp then solder the connectors and use some heatshrink tubing over the connections. Don't forget to put the heatshrink on the wire before the connector and use a good grade of electronic type solder. Mount the relay someplace that will be protected from the weather a little and you're done. Now go scare hell out of the next errant cager. Pere, DANGER. Please check your chain tension immediately. I suspect the dealer has it too tight. Make sure the suspension is loaded with you on the seat until you understand how it affects the chain tension. A KLR with no rider will appear to have a good adjustment, but place a rider on the seat and the chain becomes too tight. Very common mistake, I have to routinely tell mechanics how to do it correctly. One of my pet peeves.(idiosyncrasy).If it's way too tight damage may have been done and I would not adjust until you notify the person responsible(for possible warranty claim). Took the bike out to Blockbusters tonight and decided to test the horn on a few of the more out-of-way stretches of road. A drastic improvement over the old setup. I now feel comfortable that anyone one from my 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock position would easily hear me, and that goes for highway speeds, too. Not bad for $25.84 and two hours of my time (most of it spent splicing wires). Thanks Mark for putting the bug in my ear... FWIW...
