The bummer is that the damage that is possible is that it will roast the horn switch by running too many amps through it. Relays are easy to obtain and would eliminate the danger. I expect that the horn button might be part of an expensive assembly. What is the scoop supposed to be with dogs and potential hearing damage? I have taken my dog to the range several times and am not sure what I should be doing. When I shot center fire pistols he seems pretty content, when I would shoot center fire rifles I would put him in the truck. A couple of weeks ago I went out and popped 500 .22s and he laid their and watched like I was watching TV. Dogs hearing is on a different frequency than that of a human. They cannot hear low frequency well at all. We humans cannot hear high frequency well. That is why we cannot hear a dog wistle but a dog can. Loud noises however can contain high frequency waves and can be damaging. But I have never known dogs to be adversly affected by gunfire.
