"The Mix" is the album that turned me on to Kraftwerk, and I still find it enjoyable after hundreds of listens, just like KW's other albums. I think what we need for this question is a clear definition of the word "outdated." All of Kraftwerk's recordings sound old, just due to the old technology used to make them. And, stylistically, Kraftwerk's songs are simpler and slower than most modern electronica. If you listen to Kraftwerk and Orbital songs back-to-back, there's no doubt that they were made in different eras. "The Mix" sounds like it came out between 1990 and 1993, which it did. If that means that its outdated, than so be it. But no one is going to mistake TEE for an album that came out yesterday. And these days, a nine year old with a nice computer can make music much more modern sounding than "Radio-Activity." Kraftwerk's first 4 albums ("Tone Float" through "R&F") in some ways seem the least old of KW's discography. They are really too experimental to date. So, I think there is a difference between "old-sounding" and "outdated," but I'll leave it up to someone else on the list to define the latter term. Are The Beatles outdated? People have built upon the basic rock structures laid down by the Beatles and have created much more complex, emotional, and modern-sounding music, but there are still plenty of folks who like the original the best. So it is with Kraftwerk. I have in the past ridiculed people who exclusively like classic rock or other old music, because I am a believer in progress and believe that music is constantly pushing forward, just like science and technology. But that doesn't mean the work of the past is trash. Everyone on this list knows there is something special about Kraftwerk's melodies that's hard to find in today's music. That is because Kraftwerk has created masterpieces that will still move people even as the albums themselves begin to sound hundreds of years old. Personally, I like being able to listen to the complex 21st century music of Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails' "The Fragile",the minimalist 1977 groove of TEE, and the works of Mozart, and have appreciation and love for them all equally. Good tunes are good tunes. So my questions are: What does "outdated" mean? Does it even matter if Kraftwerk is outdated? It's still good music!!! And as for the ruination of that classic work we know as Airwaves........... I'd be willing to bet that they will never play "SpaceLab" live anywhere. I like the Luton Hoo song, though. I like the idea of ambient-type music like that. That little QuickTime movie on kraftwerk.com was pretty cool. The ZKM tracks are too lifeless, lacking energy. The Luton Hoo song has a little zing to it. By the way WGN AM 720 in Chicago has a show called "Web Site Wednesday" that actually starts on Thursday morning after midnight (Central Time). They also broadcast in real audio at: http://www.wgnam.com/ They play "Home Computer" at the beginning and sometimes when they come back from ads. This message is long and a bit technical, so I apologize if this post bores some of you. If anyone can help with this and is an electronic musician (Kevin Lux from the KW list; maybe you could help ?) I'd greatly appreciate it ! Lately I've been considering what moves I should make with computers when I will be upgrading my studio soon. I already have a PC, but I hear from experts that in order to really have a powerful digital audio workstation based around the PC, you have to do a lot of system tweaking and get a really expensive computer. Mainly a lot to do with DMA settings, buffer settings, and video cards. There was one company called Sound Chaser that told me more about it and basically said that there's really no way that you can get a cheap PC system and expect it to do loads of tracks and 24-bit audio. They said that I shouldn't buy anything besides a Pentium 2 at the very least because for some reason K6's and Celerons can't handle audio that well. I also know that in order to run a lot of real-time FX plug-ins, you need a lot of memory. But how much is really enough ? I really thought about getting an Apple G4 system because PC's have always been giving me headaches since day one. I also know that a lot of people like Boris Blank, Trevor Horn, and Orbital use Macs. I had this massive system error a few weeks ago on my PC that caused me reinstall Windows and I couldn't reconnect to the net for about three weeks. But all of the good warez and cracks are mainly for PC only, and this is another big factor in my decision (Radium and EVC forever !!!) ;-) Another funny thing that I've been hearing about is this huge resurgence of Amiga and Atari systems being used for composing. I know that these systems are still really popular in Europe for recording. But aren't they mainly just used for MIDI only ? I mean, there's really no way that you can do digital audio on an Amiga or an Atari; am I right ? Then I thought about using just regular good old hardware and take the silly computing problems out of it by just getting a few regular sequencers and some stand-alone hard disk recorders (particularly the Roland VS series machines). I know that this has been discussed a lot in magazines like Electronic Musician and Keyboard, but somehow I always miss those issues ! ;-P Any help would REALLY be appreciated !!! The computer has four voices and you can load samples for each of the voices and sequence them. The Amiga has left and right RCA output jacks. Granted, these samples are kind of lo-fi, they don't have a very high sampling rate, it is an old computer system... But who says a lo-fi sound is necessarily bad? Especially with all of the great effects machines available these days, you could probably get a really unique sound. ---Jason # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Is the track different from >the album version? What does "Kouhoutek" mean? I don't know exactly, as I've never heard Kouhoutek, but I can say this: Komettenmelodie means Comet Melody. Kouhoutek was the name of a comet that made its way past earth in 1974 (I'm pretty sure - I remember the comet; I do not remember the year). I would imagine it was a slightly different version of Komettenmelodie. I'm sort of disapointed that they didn't make a song called "Hale-Bopp"... I own a 4 track Radioactivity 12" with WO hardcore remix included as the first mix on the b-side. I bought it in a record store in Sweden, but I think it has been imported from the States. The product number is as follows: ELEKTRA 0-66486. (Printed on recycled paper) :-) If my memory serves me well, Kouhoutek is (was) the name of a comet, and last time it was seen lots of people in some kind of cult committed suicide, in the same manner as the ones in Heaven's Gate did. Still, I have no explanation to why Ralf & Florian chose to name a song after it. Quite wierd actually... In 1982 PolyGram proposed the candidature of the second single by the Spanish duo Azul y Negro, "Me estoy volviendo loco" ("I am becoming crazy"), to the public open competition of TVE (Spanish Television) for the theme tune of the Vuelta ciclista a Espana (The Spanish cycling race equivalent to Tour de France) summaries. Since then everybody unwittingly identifies the "Vuelta ciclista" with the Azul y Negro sound. The following year Kraftwerk recorded a theme tune for the Tour de France commissioned by the organizers. Some Spanish magazines said that the German band had copied the Azul y Negro idea. That year "Con los dedos de una mano" ("With the fingers of a hand") by Azul y Negro was chosen again. I also owned Electric Cafe on Vinyl, but traded that for the above mentioned Radioactivity CD via this mailing list due to my lack of a turntable (it IS 1999 :) ) I simply want to own each studio track available, any suggestions on what to buy and where to own all songs in the least number of purchases? Well, I've had a somewhat good week, although it got off to a REALLY shitty start. So I apologize for the following bitching and moaning. ;-P You see, I missed the Coachella Festival (out in California) last weekend. Almost everyone who I've ever wanted to see live before was there, and two of my friends who were supposed to go and give me ride both couldn't make it !!!! ;-0 ART OF NOISE was also there; it has been a long-time dream of mine to see them perform their magic up on stage. These latest gigs (a short, one-week jaunt across the US) have basically served as their second tour ever (the first being in 1986). So you can only imagine how furiously enraged I was to miss out on this ! It was basically the last big event of the year that I could have participated in. Since I'm leaving for the military next month, I'm going to be missing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK !!!!! Anyways, I don't want to ramble on about shit all throughout this mail, so I'll try to tie all of this together really quick. Well, since I didn't have shit else to do last weekend, I started work on some songs. And I'm happy to say that I have finished two tracks already. In fact, I was just doing some mastering before writing this mail. So I just wanted to say a GREAT BIG THANKS to everyone who pitched in their two cents (or insert your other currency here ;-) and advice regarding all of the questions regarding digital recording and computers. For now, I've decided to save up for an Apple G4; although I've somewhat managed somehow by the grace of God to tolerate PC's and Windows, I still don't want to deal with any crap that may crop up in the future. So now, I actually have another batch of questions to ask regarding computers and recording. Here we go : 1) HARD DRIVES : Okay, I know everyone says to buy a SCSI, but wouldn't it actually be faster and easier to buy a USB or Fire Wire drive ? And do you really need to have two ? I mean, everyone says that it's easier to have two so your audio won't be bogged down by your other apps, but is it totally necessary ? 2) VIRTUAL PC SOFTWARE : I thought about buying this type of software in order to run all of my good ol' Windows warez on my new G4. But is it really effective ? Does anyone know how it runs ? 3) 16 or 24 BIT AUDIO : Does it really fucking matter ? 4) CAKEWALK PRO AUDIO 8 AND LOGIC PLATINUM 4.0 : If anyone has these programs, can someone tell me how you import wave files into your tracks ? Well, that's all that I can think of right now. I might work on a web site to host my songs on, but I'm a bit weary about this since the songs aren't copyrighted. So who knows. Anyways, sorry for the length of this mail, but I needed a good place to vent. ;-P So thanks for reading and God Bless you all. I think it could be the song used on a MTV program. The images of a mixer which dissolves into tumbling music notes from the video "Musique Non Stop" was used on MTV (a station property of Viacom) a few times every day in a leader of Paul King's program. On September 1993 it is released, also on MTV, the programme "Music Non Stop", while the actual show itself features little in the way of the band, the opening titles to the show are very KRAFTWERK. Aparently, though this has not been officially confirmed, it is KRAFTWERK themselves who have supplied this music, similar in feel to "Music Non Stop" though quite different. A familiar, synthesized/vocoded "robot voice" repeats the title frequently, with some small synth voices on the background. Even the titles themselves have a KRAFTWERK feel, with the main logo being very similar to the animated logo seen at the band 90's gigs while performing that song. I thought that originally, but it is definitely Kraftwerk. The end credits to the show, which strangely don't get used very often, confirm it: "Title Music - Kraftwerk". Taking a visual look at the CD, I see that there is quite a lot of content on it (when holding it to the light in the right angle, you can tell that it's almost half full) .. but it's runtime in my CD player is only the few seconds for the Jingle tracks. I tried to put it into my CD-ROM drive and also into my CD-Writer.. but all my PC tells me is that it's an Audio CD. Date: 28 Oct 1999 14:58:53 +0200 Sorry if the contents of this post are a little bit technical.... I've been testing it for a long time using all kind of CD exploring software but I found NO means to access the supposedly hidden data. There's only one session on the CD, no "hidden" tracks, TOC (table of contents) is perfectly normal. BTW, I wish to thank Paul Crowley of CdRom Productions (http://www.cdrom-prod.com) who helped me in a big way and also supplied some custom-made software. While it seems obvious that this CD contains data well beyond sector 2352 (last reported sector for CD-Audio data) the only thing we can be sure of is that *no* PC drive will read it since the "end of media" marker is positioned at sector 2352 as well. This means that the very drive firmware will disallow reading beyond that sector. I didn't test this CD in a Mac environment but I'm almost sure that the results will be the same. Another untested environment that *could* lead to some results is CD-I. I don't have access to this kind of equipment but it's well worth a try. Please keep us informed! Simply incredible!! They got to interpret five music of form KRAFTWERK totally innovative, delicious and with the respect that the German masters deserve!! And more: just using acoustic instruments, as violas and violins. It is really something different!! I recommend: if You didn't still hear, try to hear that CD of Balanescu Quartet!! It is simply one of the best tributes rendered KRAFTWERK, through five strips (The Robots, The Model, Autobahn, Computer Love and Pocket Calculator). In some moments, it seems that heard Mozart!! My 1983 12" has "version allemande" on the A-side and it is sung in German, the text being close to the French version. I don't have the text written down but I am sure it is to be found somewhere in the FAQ or on some discographic homepage. Then about Wolfgang's book, why so few reactions on this list?? All of you on the list who understand German should read it! It is an interesting personal account of Wolfgang's youth and his life with Kraftwerk, their not so electronic life style (where even gail might be in the vocabulary...), and reflections about Ralf, Karl and Florian as persons. Also of technical interest is the electronic percussion (at least new to me, did I miss something?) used a few times in 1975-76, i.e. a metal tube box where Wolfgang waved his hands past photo cells to produce sounds. Interesting. greetings Fredrik (great if they release anything on December 6, even Expo stuff) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions?
