I can recommend "Other Music" located at 15 E.4th Street just down the block from Broadway. They have an excellent selection of=20 kraut-rock including the likes of Can, Neu, Tangerine Dream, Stockhausen, Cage, Kraftwerk, Yello, etc., as well as indie, ambient, experimental,= dance, and techno to choose from. Most of the store's merchandise are in CD= format, but they do have small 12", 7", and LP sections as well. As far as KW goes, this place always carries a decent selection of some of the band's music on CD, namely the German-language versions of their discs plus the Germanofon bootlegs of the first 3 KW records. In addition, one can occasionally find a vinyl Kraftwerk LP or two here. Apart from that, you can occasionally luck out at "Second Coming Records" located at 235 Sullivan Street right off W.3rd. Second Coming is comprised of two stores right next door to each other, one containing only vinyl, the other only compact discs. Occasionally a decent find to be had by Kraftwerk fans, but you have to luck out. Happy hunting! :-=DE=20 - -- Scott M. Cubic Player does almost any music or sound format on almost any sound card. It plays MP3 files fairly well on my P75 and GUS. You should be able to find it at most FTP sites that have MOD players. cp17.zip is the filename, I think. I dunno if that version plays MP3s - I'm using CP 2.0 alpha, which may be a little harder to find. /* Soleil "Ra" Lapierre www.cuug.ab.ca/~lapierrs * * "The human race believes in not taking its problems seriously * enough to solve them." - Celia Green */ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Other questions? This problem might occur when you download mp3-files using a web-browser. The solution could be to hold [shift]-button (I'm using Netscape 4.0) when clicking on the link to the mp3-file or, if possible, use a ftp-program (like CuteFTP or Ws-FTP). There is a way to fix bad files: process them with some 'uncooking'-program like Uncook or Phix. These programs and much more are available at http://www.layer3.org/ 2. I've encoded some WAV-files to mp3 format using MPEG Encoder 0.07 and MPEG Layer-3 Producer, and never experienced any problems (well, encoding is quite slow with some programs, you might as well have lunch/dinner in the meantime :-) ). My first guess to Vladimir Tittl's problem ("I seem to always get a high pitched sound going through the whole track :-( ") is that there is someting 'wrong' with the program used for recording the WAV-files (or the soundcard). Try using Goldwave or Cool Edit. These and the encoders mentioned above can be downloaded from www.maz-sound.com My other guess is that when recording from sources outside of the computer i.e. a mic or CD-player, the magnetic fields induce noise in the interconnecting-cables, causing distortion of the sound in some way or creating high-frequency 'tones' also recorded. I usually turn my monitor off when recording. Doing this and using as short cables as possible will decrease the risk of induced noise. 3. > BTW Let's vote on format who'd prefer ra and who mp3? Which sounds > better? Well, RA was (probably) invented to enable streaming sound over the Internet while MPEG was (probably) invented to give the best possible quality-compression ratio. Personally, I think that mp3 is better in general: higher sound-quality plus there are several encoders and players to choose from. The ability to listen to RA-files while downloading isn't very useful if the net is heavily loaded; the sound gets all chopped up... "Stockhausen: I dreamed the sounds of future" [well, in english sound a lot more techno... :-) ] One of the fathers of electronic music, the german composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, born in Modrath 22 august 1928, will have shortly his his 70th birthday. But celebrations have already started from Paris, where it began a month of musical happenings, lasting until 27 april. Essential titles of his production: the Klavierstuecke serie, started in 1952, Gruppen, Carre', the hypnotical Gesang der Juenglinge (Chant of the Adolescents, 1956), that given him the status of pioneer of spatial treatment of sound, Ziklus (1969) that propone the synthesis of rumour and sound, Mantra (1970) for two pianos, short wave radio, "cembali" [well, I don't know how to translate this: for sure it's not cymbals] and modulators, and the last Quartet for Archs and Helicopters (1995). In this interview S. talks about his great musical cycle titled Licht (light), attacks the labels politic and explain his conception of the modern composer. Q. It's from 1977 that you work esclusively at the realization of an unique project, Licht, that will soon be finished, an opera articulated in seven "days" [giornate]. What was your starting motivations? A. Before Licht I worked for 3 years at the composition od Sirius, music for a year, developed starting from the four seasons, from the twelve months and from the zodiac signs. With Licht I transposed this schema to the week, and later I will think about Der Tag, the cycle of the twenty-four hours. I am attired by the cosmic rhythms, by the cycles of planet and stars motion. Q. Another big project that you organized in the last years regards the recording of your compositions, that from now on will be published only from your personal label, Stockhausen-Verlag. Why did you start such an emprise? A. I made more than one hundred records for Deusche Grammophon, and another lot for ther labels, too. But in 1984, the marketing offices of the big labels told me that they could not continue to produce my works as in the past. I had worked hard on projects and mixes for nothing. Q. But you... A. I am the only living [classical] composer whose production realized actual gains, but it seem that this is no longer sufficient to the new profit esigencies! And Gesang der Juenglinge sold 130.000 copies... All my records were progressively canceled frm the catalogues. Then, in 1991, I thought to produce a record or two. Just to see what happen. Now we propose more than 70 titles. Q. And do you sell many of them? A. No. The cd n. 3, dedicated to electronic music (Gesang der Juenglinge, Kontakte) is the most requested, we sell about 150 copies of it per year. Next is Gruppen, that reach 100 copies per year. But this is not important: the aim is not to become rich, but leting the compositions to be always accessible. Q. It is said that, for the same reason, you have fotocopied all of your partitures to store them in antiatomic shelters located in the five continents. A. The truth is completely different. The fotocopies of the sketches of my first 13 compositions were sold - at the cost price of the fotocopies - to nine international institutions, like the University of New York or the Sacher Institute of Basel. Stockhausen has no money to build antiatomic shelters. Perhaps this is the hidden desire of someone! Q. It should be said that sometimes your ideas bring out imaginative comments, like when you utilize four helicopters in one of your composition. A. This was because of a dream. The Salzburg Festival commissioned me an arch quartet. I never writed one, as well as I never composed symphonies or concerts, because I think that form is equal to contents, that contents is equal to material and that materia is equal at form... Then I dreamed about four musicians that were playing on four helicopters. I found the perspective interesting, and I sterted to think about how to realize it. I went at studio some days later and through a window of the fourth floor I saw four helicopter spinning around me. I was encouraged to realize my dream. I made it, after many difficulties, in 1995 in Holland. Now this is the third scene of Wednesday, in Licht. It will be performed in Leipzig, in 1999, during the Art Festival of [Sassonia]. Sometimes life changes... Q. Your one seem to shift toward isolation. Did you search for it? A. Absolutely not. I wrote 32 works for orchestra that are almost never performed. Anyway, orchestra should evolve. There is no need of 16 first violins that plays the same notes, as it is used now. In a modern orchestra I place three synthetizers that produce tymbres that are thousands times different respect a traditional orchestra. Q. You work a lot in studio. Is this the place of future's composers? A. This is a good solution for electronic, but for me is also important live music, so I pass half of my time to work with groups to prepare public performances. The composer of tomorrow should be, like in the past, the realizator of his works and show that he is not just a musician but also a good technician. (Pierre Gervasoni, (c) Le Monde, La Stampa) then there is this short article: A Renaissance Artisan [He] produce records and sheets by himself, with help from relatives: like Bach Stockhausen Verlag, Kettenberg 15, 51515, Kuerten, Germany. If you write, the maestro will answer. Not to telephon calls, he does not own one. This musician exploring the possible future forms of doing and listening to music is proud of the small, renaissance-like dimension of his job: the productive and distributive cycle of his compositions is done in the home shop. [...] Like for Bach and other musical families, the sons help the father [...]. Sylvano Bussotti [...] after ending the contract with the publisher Ricordi, print by himself his partitures. A lot of coleagues think about doing so as well: computers permit to accurately copying parts, check for errors, print in nice form, offer it on the electronic market with strong reductions of costs for promotion and marketing, activities once only pertinent of publishers and artistical directors, now too lazy. [...] Naturally the home shop is possible because the sales are on small levels [...] but enemies of contemporary music should not smile: the record industry in the whole is passing a moment of difficulties. It happens that te most famous directors working with the most important orchestras and with the most glamour soloists sell some few, very few thousands of copies. The 130.000 copies of Gesang der Juenglinge remain a chinera for everyone but Pavarotti. The coherence of this 70-years old german composers became then indispensable.
