After going through most of the store I discovered that everything I was looking for had been moved into one little section called "Electronica". Ambient, trance, techno - it was all there. As long as that word is used to cover all electronic music, I like it because I now know that that little section is where all the real music is and I need not waste time with the rest of the shelves. Anyway, on past recommendation of list members (I'm not blaming anyone here), I picked up: Aphex Twin: Come to Daddy This is definitely RDJ. You can tell by looking at the cover. The music was about what I expected, and I especially liked the use of arcade game samples on one track. Can't go wrong doing that. I'm not disappointed with this one. Komputer: The World of Tomorrow Yes! *Finally* I've found something by the mythical Komputer. This is good stuff. The lyrics lack KW's humor and have no real point, but the music is good. The vocoder has some odd high-end effects that KW's doesn't. The cover art is nice, but doesn't evoke for me the atmosphere I think they intend it to. By the way, does anyone know what those house-things on the front cover really are? They look like some kind of bathroom fixture to me. Mouse on Mars: Autoditacker This doesn't work for me at all. Most of it is uninteresting. It sounds like amateur ambient, which is not an inherently bad thing, but in this case it's just bland. This one disappointed me. There was a sticker on the cellophane proclaiming "[MoM are the] Inheritors of Kraftwerk's Mantle". I disagree. Of the three I bought, Komputer was by far the most KW-ish. What exactly was MoM's connection to KW anyway? There's no credits or other explanation anywhere with this disk that suggests a link, but I remember it being discussed on the list. I guess I'll hit the archives. My off-the-cuff ratings after my first listen: Come to Daddy: 7/10 World of Tomorrow: 8/10 Autoditacker: 5/10 /* Soleil "Ra" Lapierre www.cuug.ab.ca/~lapierrs * * "The human race believes in not taking its problems seriously * enough to solve them." - Celia Green */ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Like 'Exceller8', 'Elektro Kinetik' is fairly common (expect to > pay a similar price), There are some more (from France and Italy). Why do you think Elektrokinetik isn't as rare as Exceller 8? It's just the other way round. No wonder, as Exceller 8 was sold for many years, Elektrokinetik was released in '81 and disappeared soon. > however 'Highrail' really is rare and a dealer might > take you for a full ton on that one. Like with Pop Lions, don't believe the dealer crap. It's not rare at all, and Highrail was even sold in the UK as an import. But Highrail really is the top contender in the 'awful sleeve design' contest. If you're interested in the early Kraftwerk music, it a good idea to get the original presings of KW1, KW2 and Ralf & Florian instead. (or even the bootleg CD's). Can you recommend any albums of his that are similar in style to what >was included on the "Lost Highway"? That stuff was groovy! i'd recomend 'Oedipus Schmoedipus', 'The Negro Inside Me' and his current album 'As Above, So Below' for sweat (though be aware that 'As Above...' is his first non-instrumental solo release but he has a good voice). all his stuff is on Mute BTW. his earlier stuff is also well worth getting if you can find it ('Moss Side Story', 'Soul Murder', 'The Man With The Golden Arm'), he also did an excellent soundtrack for the film 'Delusion', however this stuff is even more eclectic than the morerecent releases and perhaps not to everyones taste - but they're works of genius IMO. yes, i am a big Barry Adamson fan if you hadn't noticed :) Some of the list oldies might remember the band Magazine with whom our Bazzer played electric bass in his youth. a highly talented multi instrumentalist, he's been in Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and made guest appearences on other groups albums too numerous to mention. check him out - he's fucking brilliant :) jon alsbury i want to die in my sleep like my grandfather ... not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Thanks! -Keith J. You are right, my browser doesn't give me the full URL of the page of the actual review, but seems to give me the complete URL of this one: http://www.rollingstone.com/sections/performance/text/default.asp THEN click on "Concert Reviews" THEN click on "Kraftwerk". Are there any KW fans in Russia? It would seem that a typical Russian wouldn't have easy access to KW around 1970-80 and not discover them now anyway. Of course Germany isn't that far from Russia, but does anyone have insight on the Russian connection besides trying to be international? They have Cyrillic characters on the Man-Machine cover. Were they planning on selling it in Russia and reaching a Russian audience, or just give the impression that they are in the past looking forward? Is Spacelab another example of looking to the past of what was considered the future, since Spacelab may have already been history by 1977. The inclusion of Russian in "The Robots" may come from the fact that "to work" means "ra-BOT-yeh" in Russian. Also probably a lot of work in robotics was done by Russians. "Ya Tvoi Sluga.
