(SLIGHTLY off topic) If you recall, the record companies FREAKED when tape-to-tape was introduced. They FREAKED when the CD-R was introduced. They're FREAKING over DVD-R. Copying has always been easy (relatively speaking), and gets easier as technology improves. That doesn't mean that the record industry is going to die. They've survived and will continue to do so. There are three main issues as I see it. 1. People are always going to violate copyrights. 2. The price of music will continue to increase as #1 increases 3. The record companies have to give you something that you can't get from a pirate copy to give people incentive to buy the original product (artwork, stickers, registration (?!), something tangible, something special). FWIW, there's something about owning an original. One, you know that some of your paltry salary is going toward the artist.. I've always looked at it as a "thanks" to them. I have most of the KW CDs, actually, the only one that I'm really missing is Autobahn. But, I have it on CD-R. When I see it for less than 40 bucks in the local record store, I'll buy it. Just so I can have the artwork, original CD, etc. There are tons of copyright inhibitors, but they will all be cracked, period. Just look at the Playstation. Mod Chip, bingo bango, copy Playstation CDs onto CDR. However, with something like that, you don't have to worry about the software development team not coming to your town for a live concert. (SLIGHTLY off topic) The point has been made that "owning an original" has a kudos which will help stop piracy. Well, maybe so. This could be a good thing, considering some of the crap that gets put out by record companies, especially back catalogue stuff. The state of Kraftwerk's back catalogue on CD's a bloody joke really. I mean, they won't even RELEASE the first 3 ( 4, including Tone Float) albums!!! Yet people obviusly want to hear them (I love them!!)...so much so they resort to piracy. Kraftwerk can hardly moan that they are losing royalties, can they, if they won't release the material in the first place. =20 And most of the later albums' packaging is a sad travesty of Emil Schult's originals. Especially Autobahn, where Conny Plank & Klaus Roeder are "non-persons"! In the wider world, it is patently obvious to people the record company treatment of back-catalogues is one big rip off, since most re-issues come with barely a track-listing, never mind lyrics or original artwork. And how many times have you seen you "lifetime of listening pleasure" CD suddenly appear back in the shelves "remastered", because it's sound quality was actually complete crap. In any other situation, one would have the consumer right to bring back the original and have it replaced as substandard!! With CD's it's meant to be a bloody privelge to get to buy the "luxury" remastered version... (SLIGHTLY off topic) >the music industry would become non-profitable. But perhaps the net-police ok, non-profitable. then why not let copying become not profitable? I mean, toward buying the original. for instance, there are around some decent classical cd recordings that sell for around 10-12k liras, that's about 4 pounds or 7 dollars or so. if I want to copy one of these cd I'll have to spent 3-4k liras for a new writable cd, then leave 650-700 mb of hd free, then losing a lot of time... I'll prefer to pay something more to the guy of the record label who mastered it for me. ok, you are talking about net music. I'll have to pay telephone time, a provider, I'll have to have a computer... mind, there will be people without a computer in the next years! and they will be the majority I suppose. let's have the labels cut their costs and see what happen. stockhausen do sell his record on his own, and it may be not profitable but he is not in loss. his label was not able to do so. so there should be a lot of money spent on useless things by the label. maybe this is one of the cases in which large aggregation of business does not bring reduction of costs. let's conserve the standard concept of label for hyped preconfetionated girlie bands or usual top sellers like springsteen or u2 or this kind of things. anyway, what I don't really like is people thinking thay know more than me: I know very well that if I keep copying cd music business will stop and there will be no more such delicious things like the abovementioned groups. I do know very well, but I just DO NOT CARE. if you can stay in business only by menacing people of not doing things like copying discs, then get out of the balls. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Many thanks Thomas, and everyone else who emailed me the address. The question remains though whether this should really be a "secret" address or whether it's acceptable for it to be recorded in the FAQ. Maybe some of the relative "insiders" on the list might have an intuition about this? Does the studio's address appear in Duesseldorf telephone directories etc? B. Marcus Fjellstrvm wrote: >>True. No need to apologise, I meant the question quite literally, not as a rebuke! I think it's quite a relevant debate to Kraftwerk. Surely Kraftwerk were being "political" rather than "politically correct" - and I presume they changed the lyrics because the subject is something they feel strongly about. But "ambiguities are the very essence of art" is certainly a persuasive manifesto. The studio's presence is not advertised in Duesseldorf (neither on the building nor in yellow pages, phone books or directory enquiries). Allegedly there is no telephone. I think we ought to respect the privacy of the human beings that make this music we claim to love. For all the Machine-mythology-bullshit that they surround themselves with (and that's hyped by the likes of us lot) they exhibit very human characteristics... like being shy and private people. If you think they deserve being hounded by "fans" then publish the address. If you want them to have the working environment they need to make their music, leave it the 'secret' it is now. There are tons of them. Just fire up a web browser and search for mod players. I recommend Cubic Player, if you're running DOS. It supports most sound cards and file formats and generally works well. /* Soleil "Ra" Lapierre www.cuug.ab.ca/~lapierrs * * "The human race believes in not taking its problems seriously * enough to solve them." - Celia Green */ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions?
