Sadly I don't have a telly at the moment, so I missed the clip, but I've seen it 4 or 5 times before... the first time I broke out in a cold sweat, I thought Kraftwerk looked so amazing!! Apparently no details have been known about this show, including the date it took place. So, here we go... My friend Tom Sheehy did publicity for Emerald City during its existence. Shows there were originally booked through the huge Electric Factory Concerts organization. However, the owner of Emerald City, a fellow named Charlie, hired booker Bill Rogers away from Electric Factory. By 1981, Rogers had left Emerald City and Sheehy inherited the booking position. Kraftwerk were booked through their agency, Premier Talent in New York. The concert took place on Saturday, August 1, 1981. Tom tried to find the actual contract so I could scan it for your viewing, but wasn't able to find it. If it does turn up, I'll advise everyone. Tom does remember one incident, which was that the contract required ten helpers to unload and set up Kling Klang. Charlie the owner ignored this, and when the trucks arrived there were only four helpers there. One went to Tom's office and said, "You better watch out because there's a huge German looking you and he is really pissed!!!" He eventually found Tom, shouting in his face (with heavy accent), "Ten loaders! We tell you ten loaders!!!" Tom defused the situation by getting some security people to help out. The Kraftwerk show ended up being the final major show at Emerald City. Tom was able to find a copy of a review of the concert that appeared in Philadelphia's major daily newspaper, the Philadelphia Inquirer. With thanks to Tom, here is the review: PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Copyright (c) 1981, Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. DATE: Sunday, August 9, 1981 TAG: 8102040224 PAGE: H05 LENGTH: 36 lines EDITION: SA SECTION: FEATURES ARTS + LEISURE REVIEWS A COMPUTER CONCEPT THAT WORKS IN CONCERT SOURCE: BY EDGAR KOSHATKA TEXT: Pop music has always had a small, maverick wing that stressed a concept instead of a personality or unique talent. With the German band Kraftwerk, * which appeared at Emerald City in Cherry Hill last weekend, the " whole group" concept has been carried to the ultimate. The four-man unit has been at the forefront of pop music's " science fiction" wing for more than half a decade and has built its entire concept around the idea of peaceful coexistence between man and machine. It is a concept so strong - and visually stimulating, at least in concert - that even those who might not like the music seldom remain unmoved by the extra-musical trappings. Kraftwerk's latest album, " Computer World," forms the musical and visual theme of its current tour. Surrounded by TV screens, computer-terminal-style hardware and an extraordinary bank of sound-control devices, the black-suited foursome from Dusseldorf offers tunes with titles such as " Numbers," " Pocket Calculator," " Computer Love," " Home Computer" and " It's More Fun to Compute." The synthesized keyboard and percussion sounds prove totally compatible with the titles. Along the way, the group also revived hits such as " Radioactivity, " " Trans-Europe Express," and " Autobahn" ; the latter two were presented with Cinerama-style visuals that took the audience along the highway or railroad tracks at breathtaking speed. The group is composed of Ralf Hutter, Wolfgang Flur, Karl Bartos and Florian Scheider. computers - Edgar Koshatka Hope this has shed some light on a distant night in Kraftwerk's past, and you've enjoyed this trip back to 1981!
