Numan has never made a tribute record AFAIK. > Gary Numan borrowed not just KRAFTWERK's music but also their robot image > and their cybernetic coolness putting them to the service of colourist pop > patterns. Annother wildy assumptive statement. Numan leaned more heavily to the 'alien' approach than the 'robot' approach with his music and imagery. He was fascinated by science fiction text, and this is particularly evident in the 1979 album 'replicas'. And again, on the subject of 'borrowing' music, I might remind you that 'The Pleasure Principle' came out before 'Computer World'. In fact, it could be deemed that R&F were studying Numan in detail, a fact somewhat substantiated when viewing video clips from the 1981, where Ralf can clearly be seen dancing behind his keyboard in a rather Numanesque style. > In like manner Ultravox confess the great influence of bands like Roxy > Music and KRAFTWERK. As stated before in this ML, Numan has never directly listed kraftwerk as a major influence, in fact he is more likely to quote either glam rock bands of the 70's and the early British new wave artists such as Ultravox (pre Midge Urine) Jules # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? I just thought I'd add to the general discussion of the band Komputer as a ripoff of Kraftwerk that there is a band in Japan called OMY (Oriental Magnetic Yellow) which is a clone of the pioneering Japanese technopop band YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra). I don't thing their material is available outside of Japan though. Generally, OMY is much more up front about their ripoff of YMO than Komputer is of their ripoff of Kraftwerk. OMY albums generally have covers and names which are parodies of YMO albums. For example, for YMO's album "Solid State Survivor" there is the OMY album "Sonic Skate Survivor"... Anyway, my take on both Komputer and OMY is that they are amusing parodies with some listening value, despite their patent lack of originality. It's not like either band has any new material to listen to... YMO got back together for one CD called "not YMO" which was fairly disappointing straight modern techno with William Burroughs quotes for lyrics that didn't sound like YMO at all. Based on the few new songs Kraftwerk has played live, I worry that they are following a similar path, and we will end up with the next (and last) Kraftwerk album we get will be a very lame techno album. Oh, people were discussing Gary Numan as well. I only very recently got interested in his material, but I found some of it quite enjoyable. It's definitely not anything like Kraftwerk. I especially like all his early punk-rock stuff from "The Plan-1978" and "Replicas". I do think that he is very inconsistent, especially in his later material. It keeps sounding more and more like he is trying to do George Clinton in his backing tracks... Thomas Dolby went through a similar phase but at least he actually worked with George Clinton on those tracks... While I am jumping around the various threads, I thought I'd mention that there were some other Miami-Bass interpretations of Kraftwerk by some fellow known as "Techmaster P.E.B." on his album "Bass Computer" (1991). Needless to say, this is very much DJ album meant to play in your lowrider with the subwoofer cranked up so as to annoy the neighbors. This album also comes with the "Warning-Contains ultra-low bass which may damage speakers!" warning. The most fun part of this album is trying to identify all of the samples used... lots of Kraftwerk, Art of Noise, Salt'n'Pepa, too many to mention! So does anybody else like "Denki Groove"? They sound more like "mass" music. I guess this is ok, because it would be hard to keep big crowd of people excited and interested with their normal "slow" music, where you listen to the details of the music, but its hard to perform "detailed" music live. Hope you understand what I mean :-) And, BTW, recent KW live perfomances don't sound like modern techno. Their sound is much more .., hmm, complicated. Incidentally, I'm looking for a good quality recording of the New York concert or any other good quality recording of the 1998 tour. I have a good quality live recording of their August 03, 1981concert at The Ritz for trade. It's great to have found a site concerning Kraftwerk. They have no equal in electronic music. I "forgot" about it for several years until this year, when I found "The Mix" on one of my old cassettes and listened to Autobahn, which reminded me of past old days. :-) Vladimir, What year did you listen to "Autobahn"? Was it the mid-seventies? Who was the Russian Radio Station/DJ that played it? I now pose the question.....where were all of you when you first heard "Autobahn", album too? I first heard it on the radio at 5:00 PM (during peak traffic), the year, 1975. The feeling of driving from El Paso, Texas to Anthony, New Mexico (20 mile stretch) was prophetic. Here I am driving 55 MPH (back then) and "Autobahn" playing at what I would guess 98 beats per minute. (if not slower). Fast driving, slow music. This song made me think. I was still reeling from "Popcorn". Actually my father brought it from West Germany in 1975 on a tape. He was several times on computer courses there (he worked in the computer center of the local shipping company at that time). He copied "Autobahn" to the tape from his coworker's vinyl, who was also on computer courses in Germany. Because of the lack of money (there was a hard limit on how much dollars you could be given in exchange of roubles in USSR), everyone bought different LPs and then copied them from each other to tapes. So I was sort of exception, because it was very hard to have _any_ foreign music until 90's, and we had lots of it (there are still ~50 LPs staying here in the shelf, and even more tapes). Moreover, my father liked quality sound, so I listened to Autobahn on good equipment, bought in Germany too :-) > I now pose the question.....where were all of you when you first heard > "Autobahn", album too? > At home. It couldn't be heard anywhere else. There were no FM stations in USSR until 90's. There even were no radio receivers with FM band made. Actually, "Voice of America" radiostation transmitted on one of the bands for which there were no receivers made in USSR, so people had to made special band converters etc (and hide them from KGB). My father has a degree in radio ? atomic physics, so we had one :-) > I first heard it on the radio at 5:00 PM (during peak traffic), the year, > 1975.
