'80's? kinda sad really, waste of good synth's if you ask > me. wish they were more like KW. YMO albums tend to be very different from each other, but most of them don't sound like Kraftwerk. If you want something that sounds a tiny bit like Kraftwerk, you might check out their reunion album "Technodon", which sounds a bit like a mix of modern techno and kraftwerk with samples of William Burroughs. Personally, I don't like it as well as the 80's albums. An earlier album which also has a very machine-rhythm sound (although definitely NOT like modern techno) is "Technodelic". I didn't like this one that much either. Their first album, simply entitled "Yellow Magic Orchestra", seems to be mostly, if not all, covers of old-time popular tunes with synthesizers. That doesn't sound too inspiring, but actually it's one of my favorites from them. "Solid State Survivor" is mostly original songs, except for a very odd rendition of "Day Tripper"?! It includes their classic tune Rydeen, and I find it is very good in general. "Naughty Boys" is completely synthpop, very 80's sounding. It is very well done, and I like it alot, but if you don't want the 80's sound, stay away. I could go through the rest of their albums, but in general I find they all have something to recommend for me. YMO is very good because of their unique style... if they sounded just like Kraftwerk they would be Komputer and we would all hate them ;) (Well, some folks, anyway.) If you are looking for a newer, highly experimental sound, you might want to check out the works of ex-YMO member Ruichi Sakamoto, but beware. His stuff can be highly divergent, some very pop, some very techno, even film soundtracks. Strong, unique rhythms and interesting chord progressions typify his work. The other YMO members have also gone on to do other musical works, but I havn't had a chance to catch up with those yet. If you are looking for something which is more influenced by modern techno, but with traces of Kraftwerk and YMO (and a bit of disco), you might want to check out Denki Groove. They have a very dancable, comedic style. Take care. - -- Timon -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Are you sure? I must check my copy! (Well, maybe the arcade machine noises they copy count as covers of popular tunes!). Coincidentally, I've been listening again to their album "BGM". Yes, it does sound very "eighties" but was very inventive for the time, IMO, and still very enjoyable. johan.andersson@allers.aller.se wrote: >Got these two mail to my homepage, anybody on this mailinglist know anything >about this? Haruomi Hosono invented the future listening genre which he released some records and set up several labels at the beginning of the 80's. He was the discoberer of Pizzicato Five. Hosono created a musical proyect called HAT along with Atom Heart (Uwe Schmidt) and Tetsu Inoue, their album was titled "HAT: Tokyo/Frankfurt/New York" CD (Rather Interesting, 1996) and their track "Organic Mango" was included in the sampler Real Intelligence 2 CD (Rather Interesting, 1996).
