In the old days (let's say 1970's) there were only hardware sequencers: Boxes with a number of knobs or sliders (16/32 or 48). What you could do was set these knobs or sliders to a specific value, each representing for example a note. What the sequencer does is send these values to a sound generator (or synthesizer) in a specific tempo you can also set. This results in a continuing playback of the same notes, over and over again (listed to the start of Europe Endless for example, you'll know what I mean). Later, the sequencer developed into something much more powerfull (still talking about hardware) where you could play notes on a keyboard, the seq would record these and would be able to play them back, over and over again. (You can compare it to a tape-recorder, but the seq does not record the actual sound, but only information: Note hight, length, volume etc....) Nowadays, most sequencers are software-based, but the principle is still the same, you play notes, and the sequencer plays them back. In a software sequencer you can record or program many tracks (like a multi-track recorder) and play them back all toghether. Popular software sequencers are: Cubase, Cakewalk, Logic. Popular hardware sequencers were made (in the old days) by Moog and ARP, there is a revival going on right now, Roland and Yamaha sell hardware step-sequencers, but a company like Doepfer still produces (take a look at http://www.doepfer.de/prod_e.htm and check out the "Regelwerk", "Schaltwerk" and "MAQ16/3"). You will also notice that the names Regelwerk and Schaltwerk probably remind you of Kraftwerk, and Yes, they not only use these machines, but both Ralf and Florian actually helped design them....). Regarding the second question: where does Kraftwerk use a sequencer: They use them all the time for anything from a simple synth line (like in Europe Endless or the Man Machine) to basslines, percussion, drums. actually, what I say at one of last years concerts, most of the time the KWers actually only trigger sequences to produce the songs, where the lead sounds are played live (by Ralf) and the sound effects and robotic voices are played by Florian. How do you think a song like "The Robots" is played live, with none of the members on stage??? That's a sequencer (or a whole bunch of sequencers)... Hope this helps, Leon (http://home.wxs.nl/~lmols) (using Cakewalk software sequencer and a Yamaha RM1x hardware sequencer to trigger and play sounds from several synthesizers, myself....) - ----- Original Message ----- > 1) What exactly is a sequencer, what does it do?
