After all, most of the counters we know and use (watches, odometers etc.) return to zero to indicate the beginning of a new "period". I'd like as well to point out a minor imprecision in Kevin's message: > the absence of a "year zero" is no problem at all. On the contrary, it would > make chronologies extremely difficult. This is arguable. The absence of a "year zero" keeps our calendar system out from the *relative* numbering system. If there had been a "year zero" we will not be arguing over when the next millennium starts and we would have saved ourselves some headaches while mesuring time spans across the BC/AD borderline. Answer quickly: how many years have passed between March 13, 1996 and March 13, 1997 ? That's easy, one year. Now: how many years have passed between March 13, 1 BC and and March 13, 1 AD? Those of us who answer "two years" are allowed to celebrate the arrival of the 3rd millennium on Jan 1, 2000 ;-) Ciao, *Luca* # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? The years BC _are_ in effect dated negatively: 4 BC precedes 3 BC and so on. But as your example highlights, the ordering of _months_ BC run forward chronologically (e.g. March always precedes April, in years BC and AD). March 1 AD is "+2/12" on the graph (since 2 months of the 12-month year have passed since point 0) whereas March 1 BC is "-10/12" (since 10 months have to elapse till the end of the year, which is point 0 on the graph). The difference between these dates is (10 + 2)/12 months = 1 year. So it seems to me that neither intuition nor mathematics should lead one to get the answer "2 years"! ;-) I don't see what the introduction of a year zero would have solved, and there would have been a month which belonged to neither the first millenium AD nor the first millenium BC...? Ob. Kraftwerk: See! The burning issues of the day are still being dealt with by Ralf and Florian! Well, maybe. Electric Cafe saw the start of the move away from themes in Kraftwerk's songs, agreed? The new song(s) at the ZKM etc. seemed to be "about" nothing other than the music itself (fair enough). The forthcoming single is only nominally "about" the Expo or the year 2000. The medium has become the message, and the message seems to be: we are Kraftwerk; we sound like this. Are they giving the fans what they expect to hear? Or are they still exploring the concept of "Kraftwerk" (cf. their idea years ago of having different "Kraftwerks" for different nations!)? I reserve judgement till I hear the full single release and the new album (some time soon, surely...?!). But there are now many bands which sound like Kraftwerk. Should Kraftwerk be one of them? Just pondering... So much better than the other new tracks they have premiered over the last few years at concerts. It's got a chilling humanity to it because the simulated voices are close to the real thing, but evidently still machines. The effect is reminiscent of Radiohead's little intermission on OK Computer. If the album maintains that level of clarity and emotion it will be a stunner. Gut gemacht, jungs ! Hoffentlich wird's "immer weiter geh'n" ! And a very poor photoshop job indeed. There are flaws all over the image. Notice the repeated huge flaw in the feet. This isn't just a jpg, it's basically Britney Spears porn to me. Lame. When they applied the color wash to the background, they wiped out the hand on the far right. The shadows are very different, and that's wonderful, but why does the robot in the far right hand have a square ear/eyeglass shadow? Poor editing, that's why. The spirit of 'Man Machine' is lost in exact duplication. They are no longer similar components, they are cookie cutter images. It does not achieve anything more than the sum of its parts. Maybe it will after it is released but I cannot see any indication of that. While listening to the three unreleased live songs I always felt that there was a lot of promise. Partly that is because I prefer the heavier rhythms. But also, each of those songs had much more variety and creative interaction than this latest track. As someone said, it's just a remix of a jingle. I am glad for that as I'd be upset with an entire album of ultra-distilled music. I am venturing into dangerous territory here, as distillation and simplification of musical data is a major part of Kraftwerk. I feel that the primary purpose of the distillation method is to be able to make music which is very simple and direct, and at the same time to contain many ideas and emotions in that music. That doesn't happen here. Perhaps they are up to something. In all I am grateful that the single is being released. I wish to avoid confusing it with other aspects. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? There are other sounds that could be from Computer World, but Beck could have made those himself. I've only heard the album once. I do not yet have a copy of my own. I'm waiting until I can get the Japan of U.K. version with the bonus track. In some parts of the album, I noticed an improvement in Beck's lyrics. I like Beck a lot, but I'm not much of a fan of the lyrics he writes most of the time. They're either too random or too predictable. But in this one new track, I think that it is called "Hollywood Freaks", I really liked the lyrics. I thought they were good overall and they went together nicely. They're great. Since we're on the topic, does anybody know where I can find a CD of their album "So Far"? I know it's been out of print for a while. A fried of mine was talking to Hans-Joachim Irmler's wife (who was selling the items), and she said that the band was trying to get the rights to that album. Frankly, besides the replies already posted here (I get the digest these days), I hear plenty of people mentioning this fact. Furthermore, I don't see why people have to make a big deal out of it. Celebrate the year 2000 this year and the millennium next year. Unless there are any centenarians on this list (pretty unlikely), we've all always written the date as 19xx, and I think that moving from 1999 to 2000 will be a much more dramatic leap than 2000 to 2001.
