Yes. Yes yes yes. The 4-minute "Techno-Pop" demo still gives me chills when I listen to it. Brilliant. I've only heard the "Sex Object" demo once or twice, but I loved how upbeat it was. Want to hear a crackpot theory? I suspect that the track "Housephone" from the "Telephone Call" 12" single may be a remnant from the original "Techno-Pop" album. Maybe it's the early version of "Telephone Call", or an early remix? The reason I say this is because of the percussion. Listen to it carefully. Those are NOT "Electric Cafe"-era percussive sounds. Those are very much "Tour De France" percussion sounds! ---Jason # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Bootlegs are (generally) illegal, aren't they? > It's always puzzling me when I see such mail on the list: "great! they've > released new single, does anybody have MP3s of it on website to > download?". I ask: why they (=Kraftwerk fans) don't buy the original? Partially because there's usually weeks between the releases of a new single in different parts of the world. I downloaded the Expo2k singles as MPEG-audio because I was curious of what they were like before the CD single was released here in Sweden. Naturally I later bought the CD. Another reason might be that we already own/plan to buy the original, but we want it as MPEG-audio as well for fast & easy listening with our computers or portable MPEG-audio players. > I'm really worry that internet and free (=stolen) MP3 will kill the music. IMHO I don't think you have to worry. I even think it will promote quality (of course I'm subjective! ;)) since those who really care about what they listen to or have a distinct taste probably will be buying the originals anyways. I also believe that in some cases the record industry could benefit from MPEG-audio spreading. I have often d/l'd an MPEG-audio file of something I've never heard of before and then bought the record, since I wanted to own something with a pretty cover that I could hold in my hands, with full CD quality sound. Without hearing the MPEG-audio file I don't think I'd even had bothered to find out what the specific artist sounded like in the first place. > Of course, it's OK if some generous owner shares some rare, unavailable > stuff with the rest of list members! Yes, Electro-Oldies! KW going acoustic? That, my friend, will never happen, only because Ralf *is* a robot who thinks the guitar is an instrument from the middle ages. However, as you may know, you will find plenty of tribute bands that did KW covers using an acoustic approach, and are very popular among some of the list subscribers. Would you like if someone stole your ideas? Is it wrong for someone to "steal your ideas" if they don't use them for anything? Intellectual property is a legal term, and what that really comes down to is money. Copyrights are established to prevent other people from distributing, grossly imitating, or taking credit for your work and subsequently making money from said distribution. So yeah, I guess it comes down to whether or not you feel guilty hearing work that an artist doesn't want you to hear. Well, that's ridiculous. Kraftwerk released their first three albums (1, 2, Ralf & Florian) back in the 1970's, but they're long out-of-print. I think it's reasonable to assume that, nowdays, Kraftwerk doesn't really want people to listen to these early records. Does that make it wrong to listen to it? If a musician releases a record that they later feel was a mistake, and wish they could retract, does it violate their intellectual property rights to listen to that album? ---Jason # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? You're right--- BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOUT! Chubby Checker is a classic example of an artist fufilling his contractual obligations by releasing crap. He hired a full orchestra and recorded a double-album set of the orchestra just going crazy and making noise. Two full LP's worth of nothing but an orchestra bleeting out whatever notes occured to them at that second. Crazy! Although I don't think Kraftwerk would ever consent to releasing crap. ---Jason # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Which are your 15 > favorite records you would take with you (in addition to your KW collection, > of course)? Well this is OT, but it lets us learn more about each other and gets our allegiances out in the open, so here goes: 1. Orbital: In Sides 2. Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works, Vol 2 (do the rules let me bring RDJ's whole catalog? That's about 3 weeks worth right there :) ) 3. Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes 4. Nine Inch Nails: The Downward Spiral 5. Tool: AEnima (maybe the best rock album of the 90s) 6. Metallica: Master of Puppets 7. Ministry: Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs 8. Autechre: Tri Repetae++ 9. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here 10. Radiohead: OK Computer 11. Massive Attack: Protection 12. Mix Master Mike: Anti-Theft Device 13. The Orb: U.F.Off 14. Moby: Animal Rights (*highly* underrated) 15. Wesley Willis: Greatest Hits (gotta laugh sometimes ;) ) Not a subtle bunch, but if I want subtlety I'll be content just listening to the waves. Bjork, B-Boys, Dre, Sabbath - please forgive me, I have failed you. I'll miss not having the depth of my whole collection too, since I've picked mostly mainstream artists. But such is the price of living on an isolated island. - -ericg- kraftwerk@mac.com elg23@cornell.edu # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions?
